I have a 1999 Taurus wagon with about 75K miles. Recently the sutomatic transmission has been shifting roughly on occasion and seems to be getting worse. Sometimes it bucks when trying to shift gears - especially from first to second gear. It helps to back off on the gas pedal when you feel its about to shift - kind of like driving a standard. I had the fluid and filter changed but it didn't help. My mechanic suggested a transmission specialist look at it, but I wanted to find out if there are any know common problems. Or, if I should take it to the Ford dealer and have them look at it.

Unfortunately there is a known problem, they break..mine went at 65k, planetary gearset fractured in three pieces..I would take it to a locally-owned, not major brand, trans repair shop, see if they can diagnose what the issue(s) are.. if you go to the dealer be prepared to max out your credit card..

Before you do that disconnect the battery and let it set for a few minutes.
Hook it back up and drive it like you stole it.
The transmission shifting is adaptive and will learn your driving pattern.
It may or may not help but it doesnt cost anything to try it.
Also check for any bad vaccum lines. A vaccuum leak can cause the transmission to jack up the line pressure which will cause hard shifts
Also see if you can find out what type of fluid was used in it. the 99 should have Mercon V fluid
