96 electronic issues

My 96 decided to die in traffic Monday (11-26-07). Would not allow me to put it in neutral to move the car... seemed the battery was too drained. After a jump from a very nice cop, I was able to put it in a parking lot off the street. I replaced the battery and it seemed to run fine yesterday, with battery light on. Today, I let it warm for 10 minutes before attempting to drive to work. I only got half a mile before it died again. The gauges and lights freak out, there is a slight whirring noise, and then it dies. Could it be the crank pos sensor? Any input would be great! Car ran perfectly fine before, is due for an oil change though.:rofl:
