OK, it's getting to be my first winter with my V6 2000 firebird. It has the A4 transmission and recently I've been noticing I might have a problem. When I get up in the morning and it's cold... I go to start my car and it feels like the transmission slips. The car pulls forward just a bit and then stops. This is just starting the car and not putting it in any gear. Then when I put it in gear, there's a slight hesitation and then the car goes, shifts hard into second and then I'm fine after that. It only happens when the car is cold cuz after the initial take off, it doesn't happen again. Any one have any ideas if I have a problem or is this just normal????

Thanks
Kyle

It could be that ur trans mission fluid needs to be flushed out, along with the filter dropped. What kind of mileage does it have?

I have a friend in the transmission repair business and according to him, cold weather is great for the transmission repair business. (especially very cold weather).
He say's that when folks run out on a cold morning and start and just drive off is the worst thing you can do to a transmission . He always recommends to let the car run a while and warm up before driving.

the car only has 68000 original miles on it. Only mods are exhaust and CAI. THe problem with letting it warm up is that it slips forward when I crank the car. So I can't let it warm up to eliminate this problem. Also, it may be unrelated but, there is a high pitched squel at the start up too but I figured that was a belt that needs adjusting.

Sounds like a sprag.

No the car will stay in park BUT when I start it, there's a small whine and the car pulls forward about 4 or 5 inches. So it is in park, on level ground, and it goes forward when started and then stops. It's like the gear is slipping in and out when started.

Well that's what gets me, there's a parking pawl that physically locks the trans to prevent roll when park is selected, having nothing to do with fluid pressure or anything of the sort.

I think we all at one time or another in a faulies of learning to drive put the car in park when it was still rolling, remember that horrid metallic banging? That was the parking pawl.

I asked my friend about the car rolling forward a few inches upon start up when cold and He say's that it sounds like the forward clutch discs are sticking and after running for a minute will free up but they are probably going to seize up completely in the near future.
He recommends either getting another transmission installed or having the one you have re-built

What gears, if its only first it could be only that gear itself, goto autozone and get a Scan.
