69 GTO value

hey, I'm looking at a 1969 GTO in my area and I'm thinking that the guy is asking quite a high price for it. I've looked at numerous sites with preset values for this car and it ranges from 3,000 to 7,000 dollars. HOWEVER, these sites are accurate only if the car has it's original equipment. this does not help me. just let me know what you think (anyone who is knowledgeable about this particular year) I'm not looking for a professional appraisal, just a little help.

here are the specs on the car:
1969 GTO
black paint w/flames (some rust damage on hood and trunk)
fairly new close-ratio 4 speed manual transmission
swapped (NOT ORIGINAL) 454 engine w/ rebuild in last 10k miles
hideaway lights (not functioning)
surface rust on frame and underside of car
needs moderate interior work
needs all new wiring harness (no accessories work... headlights, heater, dash lights, etc.)
needs new exhaust system(not that i'm complaining:evillol: )


well that's pretty much all i can think of right now... he's asking $8,000 for it. not just too high for me, but too high for the car. i was thinking somewhere around 3 or 4 thousand.

When some folks see the name "GTO", all they see is dollar signs. They don't recgnize that it will take $50K to make this car "nice" again. They don't CARE! As long as they make a few bucks, what goes on down the road is "not my problem".

Unless you mis-typed, a 454 is a Chevrolet engine, and if that's what's in that car, it cuts the value by 75%. A '69 GTO came with about 4 versions of 400 PONTIAC (NOT a Chevy engine). No other engines were available in GTO that year.

Yes, the price sounds a bit high. Surface rust rarely stops there. BUT... GTOs are going for big money, so it's probably the seller won't budge. He'll still be trying to sell it this time next year... Of course, if it's a Ram Air, 4-speed car, it's WORTH saving!

nope, not a mistype. i looked up all of the available engines before i posted this just to make sure that engine wasn't original. so you think the 3 to 4 thousand is a reasonable offer?

If the car is solid, $4K wouldn't be too high. Taking it back to the Pontiac isn't a BIG job, nor is it real expensive. That would be the way to make it "pay". Sell the Chevy for enough to buy the Pontiac and all the attaching hardware!

If the car is a rust bucket, pass...

IMO if it's just surface rust and is driveable $5-6k realy isn't to high, for what these are going for else where.
I'm sure some one out there would pay that $8k for a 69 GTO, running or not.

I know someone that paid $16000 for a 65' all original 396 4 speed... bought it on ebay.

the whole muscle car thing is way out of control these days IMO, people selling junk for big dollars. :disappoin

If you are realy interested try talkin his price down by nit pickin all the details that are wrong. ;)

A '65 WHAT? If they got a '65 Chevelle SS396 (VERY rare car) for that little, they "done good"... If they got a '65 GTO, they got "took", as there's no such thing as an orignal '65 GTO with a 396.

While many believe the BBC to be the best automotive power plant ever built for production (myself, included!), putting one in a GTO drasticly hurts the value. It also alters the balance of the car, which GTOs are known for, by makng it "nose heavy", taking away the biggest advantage the Pontiac has, handling. There's no lack of performance with the Pontiac, especially where pump gas (93 octane) and drivability are concerned.

Sorry about that typo Mr Pbody it is a 389 tri power.
All original, it was halfassed redone in the 80's, very low mileage.

I have some pics somewhere...... it is in storeage right now where I am at.
He only drives it during the summer, and I dont blame him. :grinno:

i'm gonna have a lot of work to do to it, so hopefully i can have it ready by the time i'm ready to go down to florida. i'll point out the things that need to be fixed to him and see if that strategy works. but the rust on the frame is mostly surface rust from what i could see... a little bit of paint damage from rust, almost no electrical components work. i'll have my work cut out for me if i can nab this one. but, thanks for the help guys. your information is much appreciated.

They got a good deal, then. The '65 is among the most sought after muscle cars out there. A TriPower, 4-speed car can bring over $100K, if done right.

IMO, the '65 is the prettiest of all the GTOs. The '70 is the meanest looking one, and actually, one of the two meanest they made in the old era ('69, the other one).

Yeah I still cant believe he bought it off fleabay. The funny thing was it was less then 10 miles from his house.
He had been looking for 3-4 years, he had bought one new in 65 but had to sell it for financial reasons.

I like a lot of the 65-66 models from GM, I think the 65 GTO is the best lookin too. :grinyes:

It wasnt fully restored but is rust free. He just wants to keep it looking original, nice red line tires.
Needs new carb's as they get out of tune and need adjusted 1-2 a summer.
Thinking about getting him some Carbs for Xmas.
