Venture front wheel beariing - ABS sensor

in my 98 venture - is the ABS sensor in the front in the wheel bearing?

My ABS light is on and my local mech told me I need to change the wheel bearings.

Yes the sensor comes with the bearing/hub assembly. ANd yes a failed sensor will pop the ABS light....but this throws a code telling exactly which sensor has failed..if that is the actual problem...a high probability, though.

well can't say I"m in love with my Meck right now. He would not tell me the "exact" code (I've got michales manual and could double check) - just that it was the driver side wheel bearing, and that I needed to replace it.

Then tried to tell me my I needed new calipers a fluid flush and clean the rear drums. Being that I just put new calipers and cleaned the rear drums myself less than three weeks ago - I then knew I was being sold up the river. For a price tag ov over $1k.

Seems like a waste to replase the entire wheel bearning / hub assembly for a sensor. I gotta think it's a bad wire to the sensor - will look into that. UNtil then will live with the ABS light and no TSC system.

Check the connector coming out of the hub, maybe it is just loose. Otherwise a new hub/bearing is about $100 and around 2 hours to replace. Hardest part is breaking the 3 bolts loose that hold the hub on, especially if you live in a place that salts their roads. You may need a puller to help separate the shaft from the bearing.

I've replaced my left, front hub twice in 10 months.

Yes...as agarb says, check connector.
I'd wait for the bearing itself to "hum" before going for another and indeed, if you have no date with the inspection, I agree with living with the light...that can be removed if too annoying, as several did.
In the event you come to change a bearing, I changed mine a few times and you need a 1" 5/16" socket and Torx 55 bit. Dislodging the shaft from the bearing can be done without a puller if you keep wheel and tire on the ground ....anyway, come back for this whenever ready for it.

Could also be your back one or two taillights not coming on when you brake. Your third brake light will still go on. Your mechanic should know this if he repairs Ventures. Common Venture design flaw. Check that first b4 you replace any wheel bearing/hubassy w/ABS sensor. If it is your brake light, we can walk you through how to repair the probably shorted ground connection in either wire harness plug to taillight circuit bd.

thanks CJS - acutaly I first looked for a grounded tailight - that where I started - good suggestion.

I gotta think it is a wire to this wheel hub. I replaced the balljoints and pressed in a new bushing a few months ago. Had this whole area about and initial the wires looked fine, but perhaps something grounded out.
