I have a 2001 Montana 3.4L with 66K miles. After the van sits overnight the inital start has a large gas surge causing very high RPM. Sometimes the starter has dificulty breaking away from the fly wheel, hence that terible grinding sound. I am not touching the gas during start up. The engine will idle at around 1900 RPM for 6 to 8 minutes followed by 1200 for another 5 mimutes then normal. I cleaned the mass air sensor and changed the coolent temp sensor. I cleaned and lubricated all the linkages. There are no error codes. Any ideas what to look at next. :screwy:

This has been reported a lot of times. It has been alleged in several instances that leaking upper intake manifold gasket would cause that....but I have never seen those who had complained come back and confirm or deny it solved their condition....
My son's '92 Z-34 :shakehead suffers the same problem....checked the Idle Air Control motor to no avail...I plan to fool the computer make it believe the engine is already warmed up..like i did on my Transport for different reason though.

You mentioned the the idle motor. I checked it... it was gummed up. I cleaned the seat and the bore. No more high surge start-ups. The start-up RPM dropped to 1250. Thanks for your help!
