Anybody have any recommendations for mileage computers for pre-96 metros? There is a really common one (but its name escapes me now) but apparently it doesn't work on pre-96 metros. Anyone have any other ideas?

Welcome to the forum sinsky!

Hey guys, ya know... The computer really isn't the thing to attack for fuel economy.

1) If you want to get the best fuel economy possible, your best bet is to: replace your old O2 sensor, do a complete ignition tune-up, keep your wheel bearings healthy, keep a free flowing exhaust, run the thinnest oil you can for your weather conditions (buy energy conserving), keep your tires inflated (34/32 F/R works well for me) and generally keep your vehicle in excellent repair.

2) Then focus on your driving habits. Grandma-it for a tank and you may surprise the crap out of yourself, even if it means frustrating the scruples out of every other driver (going) around you.

Lastly) If after you've covered bases 1 and 2 you still aren't satisfied, you can get acquainted with a dyno shop, who can PROPERLY and SAFELY make adjustments to your fuel maps (ECM adjustments) in order to squeeze a few more MPG's out for ya - but lets face it: you're already in a Geo Metro!!! This is almost as good as it gets, and it certainly is as good as it gets in terms of initial cost!!

My personal 93 geo metro who gets the piss kicked out of it everytime I drive it, gets 30MPG combined hwy/city and it isn't in excellent repair. A mindful driver with a healthy Metro should see at least 40 MPG hwy/city. If not, there is something wrong with your car.

I guess I used the wrong description- I am not asking about modifying the ECU- I want a gauge to track my mileage- kind of like what every new car has in it, where I can see my combined mpg or my instantaneous mpg. I am not worried about adjusting the onboard computer. I am looking for a Scangauge2-type contraption that will monitor my mileage concurrently. Apparently Scanguage2 doesn't work with cars that doesn't have OBDII or EOBD sensors on them and my 1994 metro xfi doesn't have those sensors. I would like to be able at a glance to see how good I am doing mileage wise.

Sorry for the confusion. I understand that by driving a metro, I most likely will not be the first one to the top of the hill.
