No Power

A deer had a meeting with my car and I lost, it was a 92 Taurus wagon with a 95 engine in it. I found a 95 wagon with a blown engine that was priced right and got it home. I made the engine swap but I don't have much power. It is very odd because the engine ran great hours before the swap. It starts fine, but when I try to go with it it seems to just bog down. I also found that in neutral it will only rev up to about 3000 RPMs. I figure this is a safety feature, but I am trying to figure out if this is the problem. ( not coming out of this safety mode) I am also trying to figure out if I missed a wire somewhere but as of now it doesn't seem like I did. It appears to have good fuel pump pressure. I will change the fuel filter today even though I don't think that is the problem. I've racked what little brain I have and don't really know where to go next. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Nick

Are you sure the parking brake isn't on/stuck? In neutral, does the car roll freely? Did you take the PCM from the car with the donor engine and transfer it to the wagon?

The car rolls very free, and no I am using the PCM that came with the 95 wagon. The engine came from a 95 Sable sedan so I wasn't sure if the PCM would be the same as a wagon. I changed the fuel filter but that didn't do anything for it. The engine just won't get past 2800 RPM. (It has a tach) I am starting to wonder if it is an exhaust problem, clogged converters or such. I guess it could be the fuel pump or even something in the tank, but I don't really think fuel is the problem. I know it is something with the new chassie because the engine runs great normally. And I guess it could be the PCM, but the check engine light is not on. It does come on before I start it so I know the light works.

Did the wagon have the Duratech (not sure it was offered in '95) or the Vulcan? Really, what I'm asking is was the engine code (Vin #8) the same between the engine that was in the car and what you put in it? If not, you certainly should use the PCM from the sedan.

You may also want to find a scan tool that can get into the datastream of your OBD-I PCM and see if there are sensors that are not reporting. Maybe you left a camshaft position sensor or something disconnected. Review all the vacuum lines as well. Even if you didn't leave one disconnected, as brittle as they get, the movement/handling could have cracked one.

Rod:

I checked the #8 in the VIN, it's U on all the cars. So hopefully that should be ok. I don't really know if the PCM on the 95 wagon is faulty. Do you think the PCM from the sedan would work in the wagon? I am trying to get a hold of a scan tool. I will let you know what I find then. I will check the hoses also.

Thank You for your help

If the donor engine is out of a '95, the PCM for that engine is for a '95, and it went into a '95 that is intended for the same engine, the PCM should work. Were the options similar between both cars (with the exception of the new one being a wagon)?

If you changed the years of engine vs the pcm you need to make sure that all the sensors are for the same year as the PCM.

The U code is the 3.0 pushrod vulcan.

The "S" cod is the Duratec and was not offered until 96

the actual engine will work. you just need to make sure the sensors are the ones for the same year as the pcm.

I have been out of commission for 2 days so I wasn't able to pursue this. But here is what I found. I dropped the exhaust system right behind the Converters and the thing took off. Seems to be good. A leak developed in the radiator and a new one should be here today. So as soon as I get that squared away I will be able to make sure it's an exhaust problem. I will tell you what I find.

Thank You for all your help and ideas
