A quick question regarding purchasing imports

Just a brief enquiry.

"IF" you were in the market for a recent model, but not new, Maserati, Aston Martin or Lotus would you purchase locally at full prices, or would you take an imported model for $20,000 less? I'll run a poll on it, and also, if anybody could tell me why/why not?? Cheers guys!! :)

Maserati, Aston Martin, Lotus - unless you're in Italy for the Maserati or the UK for the other two, they're imported no matter where you are.

So, if I could afford one, and since they're all imported, I'd probably buy one.

I think he means imported vs Aussie New.

IE, one that was sold as New somewhere else then imported vs one that was sold as new in Aus.

Dave, rather than you translate, let's have him type coherently ;)

As for the question, if you're bringing it in second hand, you're only paying reduced taxes on the fact that it's a second hand import. If you're buying it 'local' new, you're paying full price based on payint taxes on a new car.

Riddle me this - if you're buying a second hand Maserati in Oz, does the dealer need to state the origins regarding where exactly it was sold new? (i.e. whether it was imported as a new vehicle or imported second hand)

No, I wouldn't buy an import. They're tuned for different fuels and climatic conditions, and spare/replacement parts would be scarce/nightmare - and the importer/distributor/dealerships won't want to know you.

Here in the U.S. a car imported by anyone other than the maker is cosidered to be in the "grey market" and has to be brought up to U.S. saftey and emissions standards and inspected before it can be resold, which can be quite expensive. An individual may import a vehicle that doesn't meet U.S. standards for his/her personal use and register it for use in most states, but the vehicle cannot be titled in the U.S. or resold with out undergoing the retrofits and inspections.

Yeah, thats what i was thinking. If you're in the market for a Maserati I don't think money is the issue, it's about finding the one that's right for you.
