i own a 1999 lx(old reliable) with about 113,000. i gotta chance to buy a 2002(private owner) with 50,000 miles for about $5000. i like the idea of cruise control and the electric windows and doors on the 2002. my 1999 runs like a champ with new timing belt and water pump. but the a/t tranny surges going into second gear occasionally and also it feels like it,s due for some front end work and brake work. i,m the 5th or 6th owner of the 1999. which one would you pick ?

Go for it! Your transmission is on it's way out. A new tranny will set you back about $2500.00. Nobody will do the front end and brakes for less than $500.00. All that work won't increase it's value $1.00. Money spent on repairs is bad money spent. Money spent on a new car is good money spent. I know that all of you may not agree with this, but at some point you've got to get a new car. You go figure.

It wasn't until I bought my GTO a few months ago that I finally realized what a heap of junk my Escort had become. I don't replace anything on the Escort now until it breaks... with all the noise it makes going down the road I should be due from some repairs pretty soon!
