More Horsepower

Is there any way to get more horsepower out of the Geo metro motor? I noticed that cars with more power were able to get up hills better. As for me when I try to go up the same hill I have to change down to 4th gear sometimes even 3rd to make it to the top. So I was just wondering if there was something that I could do to give my car some more power.

A free flowing muffler will make a huge difference. I purchased one from JC Whitney, aluminized cherry bomb style that fit perfect, sounds awesome, and makes plenty of extra horsepower.

What does a free flowing muffler cost? And is it something that can be installed by yourself or is it something that you would have to take in? Is there a link to this JC Whitney person or a way that I could check out his products?

I believe this is the one I purchased, but I won't swear to it because it's been a few years now.

Aluminized Glass-Packed Muffler - 18" Overall Length, 12" Body, 3" Diam. Case, 1-3/4" Diam. Core, 1-3/4" Straight inlet & outlet ZX222813Y Each $37.85

A muffler shop can weld it in for you, I did it myself with an arc welder while the exaust was on the car (not the easy way). There are also kits at auto parts stores that will allow you to install it without welding, but you will need to cut the existing muffler off. With this muffler there are times I drive without the radio on so I can listen to the exaust note.

Is there anything that I can do to the car besides putting a different muffler on it?

Suzuki swift also makes a racing header for the 3 cyl. Metro. If you are mechanically inclined you could port and polish the head and intake manifold. K&N air filter is a possibility as well as an MSD Ignition.

At the moment I have ordered a K&N air filter. I will have it here within a week, then it will be time to test it out and see how it does.

Don't forget lightweight flywheels, and camshaft upgrades!! There's a guy at teamswift who makes cams (regrinds) for our cars, and flywheel discussions can also be found over there.

I've never been a big fan of engine additives but my '95 Metro was just like yours so I started using "Engine Restore" & it's made a huge difference. Don't forget you'll still be driving a Metro but it did help.
