My van was running just fine and then when I went to turn the key off the starter engaged and was constantly turning the engine over. I turn the key back on and the engine started and the starter disengaged. Turn the key off and the starter engaged again. I had to pull the negative cable to stop the starter from turning the engine over. If I touch the cable to the battery the starter will engage and turn the engine over.

Any ideas or comments on this wierd issue? Bad starter? Thanks!

If you remove the starter relay, reconnect the battery, and it still tries to start then yes either change the starter or replace the starter solenoid contacts (part of the starter). The starter always has 12vdc applied from the battery (thick red wire at starter). When you turn the key the starter solenoid contacts close providing a path to ground for the always present dc voltage. That's when the starter engages and truns the engine. If the starter contacts are stuck closed, the starter will not stop.

You can always try the tap check though it's not fool proof. Get the starter cranking then tap it with a hammer. If it stops, the solenoid contacts are bad. Do the same to the starter relay to check it.

i have had this happen on one of my old camrys! and it was a melted ignition switch, keeping power apllied to the start function! so if the starter relay checks out fine look at the ignition switch! mike

I really want to thank this site and it's providers as it is the best there is. I let the starter turn over and hit it with a hammer and it stopped. That told me the contacts are welding together. I replaced the starter and everything is fine. I have reccommended this site to everyone, as it is the best.

Thanks so much for everyones help.

Happy Holidays!
