Sound System.

I have been reading through past threads about subs and speakers and all that stuff. And there is alot of varying opinions out there im sure. But im curious what the single best setup possible is for a sub in a 3000gt, like where do u place it to get the best sound, what kind of power is needed, etc. Alot of audio stores around here told me it was pretty impossible to get very good sounding system with much "kick" to it because its a hatchback. any body know?

WHAT!? I think the hatch actually resonates the sound very well, unlike in a trunk where its muffled and most sound goes out of the vehicle.

the question is what you want, do you want it to sound good? or just be loud to passerby? just bass or everything? I will say that these cars are well made and a very loud system will barely make a sound outside the car if its all closed up.

First you need a decent head (actually affects the sound of the sub surprisingly much)

As far as subs, I think 10's are perfect for this car, I have 2 10's and the box is located in the little crevice between the back seats and the cargo area. There are also boxes that fit snug into one corner of the cargo area (only hold one sub though)

I found that when I pumped my sub up i needed to put an amp on my 6x9's to balance the sound.

i agree... those audio places don't know what they are talking about.... i have one 12 inch JBL subwoofer in a completely sealed box sitting right in the middle of the hatch facing the back and i always get complemented on the sound and my single woofer sounds way better than other people i know with two 12 inch subs, many people have often thought i have two 12 inch woofers back there....the hatch helps the sound!!! i have placed the same woofer in other vehicles too, and in the hatch of my 3kgt is where it sounds best

Hatch definately helps the sound. i Have 2 Foreward mounted Alpine type S's and one upward angle mounted audiobahn(designed to resonate of the glass on the hatch), all 10s and it sounds amazing, good punch, good sustain, and damn loud... powered by a 500 watt jenson amp to the audiobahn, an 800 watt volfenhag to the alpines and a 400 watt 4 chanel sound stream to the speakers

i see your points. what im going for isnt just sheer power or loudness or anything like that.... but im wondering what setup will give the best sound clarity along with some kick to it. ill probably just go with a single sub (most likely 10"), but im wondering how some people mount them... facing foreward or backward? up or tilted? just use a sub box and bolt it in or custom make your own? just looking for some ideas ya know? thanx

Look on ebay (search for stealth and for 3000gt sub boxes) and you will find some decent boxes for fairly cheap. If your going with one sub, i think there is a box that fits in the corner perfectly and that would be good for you, pl;us if you want to expand then you can get one for the other side and not have wasted money.

On the sub it doesn't really matter what side is faces... There just isn't that much air volume to move inside the car so it's pretty omni-directional.

I used a 10" custom sealed box. I did this mainly for a "stealth install" using the corner removing the tool tray on the left side of the car. I think I was just using a 200watt amp to power it... It's loud enough to rattle the spoiler but you can't really feel the sub outside the car (inside the car is a different matter altogether).

Seriously! Man, I will have blood comming from my ears because the music and bass is so loud, get out and nobody can even hear what song is on haha.

i always thought that if the sound was centered in the car, it reverberate(spelt wrong) better, and therefor sound better. there for one sub would work just as well as two if properly placed...correct me if i'm wrong.

Your right to a degree... Although that is mostly for room acoustics where you are taking about a larger amount of air that you are trying to fill with sound.

In a car that is classified as a "compact hatchback" there is so little air in the overall cabin that it almost responds to the change in air pressure from the sub moving and not the "wave propagation" where you are looking for the best use of reflective re-enforcements of the sound wave.

well all i have to say is that if you want enough bang to sound good inside the car and not outside...go with a 10", but if you want it to sound good and have pretty good amount of bass inside and outside go 12". or two 10".... my first setup was a single 10" and it was good for a couple days but then it just wasn't enough bass for me, so thats when i upgraded to the twelve... and if a 12" has to much bass, just turn your amp down.... i rather be able to have the power and just turn the amp down then wanting more bass but your subwoofer and your amp are already maxed out though, and if you want good sound quality with kick you will need to upgrade your door speakers and amplify them along with your subwoofer

Ok, here is my system, one amp for the subs and one for the rear 6x9's, I do still need to change out the front speakers sometime.

if you want the voice to sound equal in the rear and front, yes i would recommend changing the front speakers out and amplifying them....that is what i did and it sounded so good that i didn't even bother replacing the tweeters on the dash or hooking them up...

Haha, Well, I had some nice and EXPENSIVE pioneer subs from best buy, but they stopped working twice! (once I fixed, the wires had been blown off the woofer) so I decided to go with whatever cheap I could find after that. and the amps are actually from online, again just cheapest i could find. But the pics were really just to show the box and how it fits in that little space between the seats.

I do have some hella nice Fusion 6x9's and its cool because when the sun shines right you can see a hint of green metalic through the covers. Eventually Im prob going to get Fusion subs, but I was so pissed at those pioneers that it will be awhile.

I know man, i'm jus messin with ya, actually some of that cheaper stuff has impressed me. like Dual subs are ~$25 a piece, and honestly will easily Compete with lightning audio, and lower end pioneer w/ out much problem.

Give the Infinity Basslink subs a try, built in amp and it will fit right behind your seat. It will save you time, weight, and money. Not to mention, they sound pretty good.

Pioneer is crap. I had a HU from them that went out about six months after I installed it. The voltage regulator went out. I sold the repaired unit before it had a chance to crap out on me.
