Hey I have a 1994 olds cutalss supreme.

The car would not start. I unhooked the EGR and it fired right up.

If I plug the EGR will it hurt the motor? I heard that it may cause it to overheat?

Unplugging the EGR can cause increased cylinder pressure but until you get a new one I wouldn't worry about it too much. You don't say what size engine you have but if it is a 3.1 remove the EGR and clean the passageway to the engine clean the valve and replace it. If it stalls you will need a new EGR.

its a 3.1L

I had the EGR off already and clened the passage... With the egr off the car it started and ran fine (with the passage to the intake plugged). I mistook that as a plugged exhaust sys forcing too much exhaust back into the EGR... However, I just found out that at idle the EGR is suppose to be shut.... so it leads me to believe that the EGR valve is the problem...

But first I need to install the new cat that I picked up today.... I may need to bring the car back on the road before I can get a new valve... so I am thinking about plugging the EGR pipe.
