I'm trying to help someone with a '99 Ford Escort SE wagen. His check engine light is on and I need to know if we can get the codes without an OBD tool. If so, please point me to the right place.

Thanks,
Eddie

You can't get the codes without a scan tool. Take the car to Advance or Autozone and they will read the codes for you for free as long as the light is currently on. Make sure to write the codes down and if you post them someone will help you with repairs.

Went to advance auto and they read the codes for us:
1. P1744
2. P1506
I search the internet on what the true cause might be and I'm more confused than ever. for P1744, suggestions range from bad coolant to bad transmission!! and for P1506, some suggest to replace the IAC valve. But none of the above suggestions where for a 1999 Ford Escort.

Any suggestions or personal experience?

Thanks,
Eddie

Diagnostic trouble code P1744 is Torque converter clutch (TCC) system stuck in "off" position. TCC is controlled by an electrical solenoid which is governed by a 15 amp ENGINE fuse in the passenger compartment. If the fuse is all right the solenoid is probably bad or the torque converter is bad..

Diagnoistic trouble code P1506 is Idle air control system overspeed. This means your engine may be idling too high. You can take the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve off and spray it with some WD40. It is on top of the Throttle Body and has 2 8mm screws holding it on with an electrical connection that has to be unplugged. It looks like a small electric motor. If this doesn't work you will have to replace the IAC.
