Welcome dude.
I think there can be a lot of money in business, but not always. Are you looking to go to a 4 year school or tech school? If you are on the smarter/more driven side and are mechanically inclined, I would suggest Mechanical Engineering. Its a tougher degree, but I think the average starting for ME's out of U of M is like 50 grand a year starting. If you dont want to go to a 4 year college, I would maybe suggest auto mechanics. I think if you're good, you can make a decent amount of money per year. Other than that, x ray techs make good money, and I think nurses do pretty good too.

Yeah, like I said if you're good and you get some good breaks I think you can definately make some nice scratch doing business, but thats not a Brown College or National American University kinda thing. Making that kind of money is going to take a good degree from a good school undoubtedly with a good bit of post graduate work. A business or finance degree or something from one of those 2 year schools is probably going to land you in a dead end job making 30 grand a year doing taxes at Jackson-Hewitt or Charles Schwabb. Not a bad job by any means, but I wouldnt go for it expecting a half mil a year.

If you think about it, any job can bring you lots of money if you have the right skills for it... I've met people who make a killing off owning businesses, apartment rentals, construction, mowing grass, etc... Simple things that not everybody actually gets rich off of. It's all in how you market it and how hard your willing to work for it. Sometimes it doesn't even have to be "hard" work, just gotta be smart enough to make it work for ya.

I've thought about getting into doing apartment rentals, there's a lot of money if you do it right and get the right tenants, don't just go w/ the first tenant that applies. I work at Rent A Center and I make pretty good money there, especially for the area I live in. I make right now 2x more than I did at Raymour and Flanigan so I would suggest RAC for anyone as long as you have good people skills and you don't mind re-poing peoples stuff.

Next year I will be attending St. Thomas Academy in Minneapolis for a Mechanical Engineering degree. I have talked with many of the professors, and a handful of alumni, all of which highly recomended the degree. Some of the alumni I talked to said they started at 50 on average, but some hit about 65.

I have a few buddies that go there right now and my sister graduated from there Summa Cum Laude. It's definitely a good school, but it's no fuck around school either, I guess it's pretty tough, that's just hear-say though.
About the job thing to the OP, you can make good money at whatever you go into, you just need to know/meet the right people and be smart with your money. Some of the richest people in the world never went to college, they just applied themselves daily.

I work in the world of business, and it's definately who you know, and not necessarily how good you are. Two of our sales guys only come into the office ever two weeks or so. They say they are working from home, but are they really? Nope, and I know they make atleast twice if not three times as much as I do.
All that just because they are buddies with the boss.

Couldn't agree more. My college is actually teaching this to us now... to get out right when we get into school and goto seminars, open forums, and all that jazz and go out of our way to meet people. It's not so much talent as it is knowing people. I got my job right now because I knew someone in the business, and then once I got in, made a great impression on one person, but no one else wanted me. That one person had enough power at the time to get me in anyways, and here I am.

St. Thomas for ME? Why would you go to a more expensive and less known school for that when you could go to the U and pay half the tuition and get an education from the place that is something like 5th in the nation for MechE? It is a pretty school though, thats for sure and it does suck being a treated like a number (and a pretty small one at that) here. Regardless, its just down the river from here so I think next year I'll have to come down and tell you about how much better my Talon is than yours :p.

Well, honestly dude, you shouldn't be asking us what to do with your life. Get out there and talk to some people that have actually gone through college and are currently in that department. I know some guys here are through college, but if they are, they've barely started their career. Ask someone that's been in it for awhile and he'll tell you what he thinks. And money isn't everything in life. I'm sure you've heard that before, but you'll realize it soon enough.

Heres what you do. Go to college and take some entry level classes in the business field (micro econ, intro finance, maybe some intro management class) to see if you like it... you arent going to figure it out reading a magazine about how much you could make if the stars aligned and talking to a car forum. But like I said, dont go to it expecting a haf mil a year because you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. I'm definately not saying you cant be successful, but you have to plan for whats practical and hope for whats possible.

Well what kind of numbers would you expect from chartered accoutnants, investment bankers, financial analyst and stock brokers?
gthompson97
11-20-2007, 01:19 AM
Stock brokers can be rich as hell one minute, and broke as hell the next minute. If you're good at playing odds and like to risk the hell out of your money, be a stock broker. As for the rest of them, like I said, most of us don't research every career possible that makes alot of money. Go for what you're good at and what you like to do. If you like numbers, be an accountant, or at least take some classes to see if you like it, that's what college is all about man, trial and error. I gurantee you'll switch your major at least once, if not more, during college. And you won't make 500k right out of school either, it takes years and years of ass kissing and knowing people to be making that. With those salary figures that you're looking at, I can almost gurantee that 95% of the people making that top 10% of 500k/year have been doing their job for at least 20 years, if not more.

Asking what we would these guys would do is not going to assure you a successful career. No offense guys lol. I am the same age as you and made my decision based exactly on thors words of wisdom. I took many college level courses in highschool, in many different fields. At first I thought I wanted to be a sports fitness trainer, took a college anatomy class, and dumped that idea. Only this first quarter of this year did I take a frikin sweet engineering class, and decide to be a mechanical engineer. But hey, chances are my mind may change again. Its life man, just let it flow. But not too much, dont wanna spend college going in circles. If your mindset on getting some numbers, go to your highschool's career center and ask them. If your highschool doesnt have one, find a college and ask the administration. There not going to lie to you. I had extensive meetings with St. Thomas to try and find out what my future could be in this field, and there still are cloudy areas. You will find out what the future holds when it gets here, all you can do is try and prepare yourself.
