I have a 91 Caprice Classic. with a 305. Im trying 2 swap an 350 engine into it. I wanted to know if i can drop the engine right into it. Or will i need to put a new tranny in or anything else. If anyone could help me with this problem could you please write back. I also have 350 engine's and 383's and 402's all crate and ready to go. Thank You

If you havn't already, I'd recommend picking up a manual that covers that, so you make sure all your harnesses and connectors go back to the right areas. If you're using the EXACT same engine, you should be able to drop it right in again. The only issue I can think of would be a different sized flywheel, so be sure to compare.

However, I'm far from a mechanic. I'd advise waiting for other posters.

I did the exact same thing that you did with my 91 Caprice. I took the engine out of a 93 Roadmaster so it had everything with it including starter and accesories. The engine bolted right in with no modifications to the exhaust or anything. If you did get the engine from another vehicle and it has all the parts on it you should have no problem. The starter is different because the flywheels off of the two engines have different teeth. The PCM for the 305 might not run the 350 correctly i know when i changed my engine i changed the PCM also. I think the 305 PCM has different injector pulse widths. Other than that it should be fine. You should have fun with it and be happy with the difference.

If it is another TBI 350 it will be simple to drop it in. They are the same except for the cylinder bore, externally they are identical and even internally a lot is the same.

The computer will need addressing.

The tranny will be fine.

It is possible your car has a 7.5" axle if so the stock 350 will likely be fine but if you modify the car much there is potential to break the axle. Luckily the 8.5" axle was used in a lot of Caprices cop cars and LT1 cars had them standard so they are plentiful and a very easy swap.

To put it in perspective the 7.5" is used in the S-10 and Camaro, the 8.5" is used in the half ton trucks.
