from 1997 to 1996 fuel sending unit sensor?

i have a 1997 pontiac bonneville, and like almost all of them the fuel sensor in the sending unit didn't work properly, and the lines were all but rotted off. i went to a friend who owns a salvage yard and purchased a used sending unit out of a 1996 bonneville that worked fine in the car, gauge etc. and i then repaired the lined and promptly re-installed the fuel tank. there was a line blowout and the pressure line leaked profusely therefore i have taken it back apart. but now that i have the line replaced correctly, i need to fugure out the new fuel gauge problem.. now it sits below empty, and i'm wondering if it's because of compatabilitybetween the years, or should i try that 2k ohm trick or could it be a power or ground issue, or what? really thinking that someone on here may have seen this before, so thanks for any input guys. take care
