2001 yukon auto level suspension

I just replaced my rear shocks on the truck i tried to load it to see if the compressor would go on it starts but stops before achieving a proper level, does anyone know how the truck senses the change in level to activate the compressor? i think this may be my problem beacause when i activate the compressor manually it will raise the truck.
