Car suddenly dies while driving, restarts hours later

I have a 1990 Pontiac 6000.

I normally only drive it 7 blocks to work and back, but yesterday made an additional stop. When I came back out to get in the car, it would not start.

It turns over and sounds normal, but will not even attempt to start. I left it there overnight and came back this morning, and it started.

I decide to take it out on the highway to give it a good run at a higher speed than normal, and after about 5 minutes, it suddenly dies.

No sputtering, no funny sounds. All the accessorial lights come on like the key is on but you haven't started it yet. I am again unable to start it. Turns over, but will not start.

I've tested it several times, and if I let it sit for a few hours, i can get it started again and it will run for around 5 minutes, but then dies as I describe above.

Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? I'm concerned that it may be something electrical getting hot and shutting down.

Welcome to AF, you need to start diagnosing the problem with the basic checks, does it have spark to the plugs, do you have fuel pressure, BTW post the engine size when asking for help.

Yeah more than likely it is going to be ignition related. Next time it wont start check for spark.

Similar problems others are having too, with their Pontiac 6000 suddenly stalls, then will start the next day. No real answers found yet. see:

I encountered a similar problem with the 3100 where the cylinder six fuel injector was shorted and only had a 1 ohm resistance value, this caused all the current to go this injector and the other two injectors on the same bank weren't firing causing the engine to stall. Try checking the resistance values of the injectors, all should be around 6 or so ohms.
