Got pulled over...

Get this. I was driving through a suburb of Chicago last night at like 1am and was just driving normal. I drive by a cop that was making a left turn going in the other direction. He make a U-turn and sits on my ass for a couple blocks and then pulls me over.

He comes over, and asks about my front license plate. I've still yet to mount it since the accident, so it's in the front window. I told him I was in an accident, ordered a mount but hasn't come in yet. And I thought it was ok as long as it's displayed somewhere in the front.

Then he asks about the exhaust. I'm like what about it? "It's illegal in the state of Illinois to modify an exhaust on a car." WTF! Since when? So he takes my license/insurance and goes back to his car.

He comes back and says I'm looking pretty bad or some shit... that I'm looking at 4 seperate tickets... no front plate, modified exhaust, somethine else which I dont remember now (something stupid), and AIR FRESHNER HANGING FROM THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR! He said all that totalled up comes to over $800 in fines and a court date. In the end, I got a warning. But only the exhaust and front plates were marked on it.

When did it become illegal to hang an air-freshner, which is made to hang from the mirror illegal? It's one of those little tree ones. And this is the first time in 3 years of having the exhaust I got any kind of anything from a cop because of it.

So if you're in IL, don't go to Darien with a "modifed" car. They're dicks.

Illegal to hang an air freshener in your car? I smell some serious BS... That's messed up dude...

That sucks, at least you only got a warning. Im pretty sure you could have gotten out of most of those in court to.

He was being a ROYAL dick, but technically he was correct. It's illegal to have anything hanging from the rearview mirror for "obstruction of view", and technically by the book, it's illegal to have anything other than factory stuff on your car. But 99% of that shit is looked over anyways, it's usually those things that they'll pull you over for just to see if you've been drinking.

No he's right, all the stuff we cram into our cars is usually illegal. Cops pull you over for that shit if its that time of the month and they havve not yet made their quota on citations. Thats really pretty gay.......but you guys have to use front license plates too? How many states/cities made this a rule?

SC does not have to have a front plate. I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for having a modified car around here either. Is it just certain areas that aftermarket parts are illegal. I find it hard to believe since the aftermarket industry is so big these days.

Its a big fucking government conspiracy, the government gets a cut from the sales of aftermarket parts. Then later the cops have a reason to pull us over and search our cars, if they feel like being dicks they cite us for all they want. So in essence the government won't close aftermarket shops cause then they won't have a reason to pull people over for the hell of it. One big government conspiracy, i say they can get a spoon and eat my ass!!! LMFAO

We are supposed to have front plates in Ohio, but I didn't on the Firebird and I don't on the Cobalt either... Hasn't been a problem yet for me, but I have heard other people having problems for it...

We were supposed to have them in Alaska. I only had them in the back. I was pulled over 4 times and was never questioned about it. Then when I got to Idaho, some fag military cop that was stationed in Alaska before gave me a ticket. I didn't have to pay, but I got a talking to from my first sgt and had to end up drilling holes in my front bumper to put the licensce plate. I think the Idaho plates were front and back too. Glad to be in SC where it's just one plate.

Uhhmmm...no.

Find some documentation on this "conspiracy". You sound like a crazy person without it.

David technically it is illegal not to have a front plate if your state issues 2 plates, one for front and one for back. I have been pulled over several times for that, and always gotten out of it. I still ride without a front.

As for the air freshner thing, I have heard that it is a law that you can't hang anything from the mirror in some states for visibility reasons like gthompson said. I have an air freshner and my high school graduation tassle hanging and never get questioned though. You could easily get out of that if issued a ticket, it would just cost you the time of going to court.

You need 2 plates in NY but since my FMIC install I never put the front back on and it still hasn't drawn any attention. Never even been pulled over in my Talon even when I had a 10-day temporary inspection for 4 months and a crack along the windshield the entire width of it.

JoeSchmoe was kidding. Yet he might be wearing a aluminum foil hat right now so the gov't can't read his mind. "Hangar 18, I know too much......"

We're supposed to have them in ND too but I usually don't put one on, but the cops love me for that I guess.

Basically what law enforcement agencies will consider 'illegal' are thos things that are not DOT approved such as modified exterior lightings , Federal emission ( cats , mufflers , blah blah ) however you can fight an exhaust modification ticket as long as you can get the car down to a state inspection place to clear up that you have not removed the cat and the muffler is no more than a noise supression device..woohoo 25.00 noise violation ticket = better than all that nonsense dealing with federal emissions.

Utah has a 2 license plate law as well however in my mazda 6 , there is no mounting point for the front license plate. no holes , no brackets , nothing and I got pulled over for it , written a 100.00 ticket , went to court , explained my situation ( considering it came approved from the factory that way ) and got out of it.

They can't force you to start drilling holes in your car to hang their plates.

I dont think exhausts are illegal as long as they are under I think 93 db and you still have your cat(s). Unless your car is 95 or older then cat(s) don't matter. Or unless you live in a state where you don't have to get your car inspected. But some companies like DC sports exhausts are all 50 state legal. But in the area I live noone cares about how loud your exhaust is. All my redneck friends have straight pipes on their z71's. I got straight exhaust on my eclipse too, no cat or muffler. My car doesnt throw a CEL for no cat either which is weird, but good because it passes inspection even though it is a '99. I don't understand it....I think the rear O2 sensor is F'ed...its plugged in but is zip tied to the underside of the body, lol. Where I am from the only thing people care about is tint and red and blue underbody lighting.

l eclipse l, Don't nuke us bro!!! Dont nuke us!!! LOL, yeah i worked with a guy whose dad was a cop and he said his dad would pull people over whenever he did not have enough citations for the end of the month. And as matter of fact, i am earing a lead vest and aluminum foil hat. "The government took my babies!" Quote, Family Guy.

Wow lots of replies on this one lol.

I know I need a front plate. I did hear somewhere though that it has to be displayed somewhere on the front of the car. I told the cop that and he said yes but it can't be behind a windsheild. It's also illegal in IL to have license-plate covers, which the windshield is technically acting as.

So an addition to this story. I was in the gas station filling up this morning at like 10am by i55 and a State cop comes in. They usually sit there because it's right by the exit/entrance to the expressway and is at the bottom of a hill that kinda curves. I'm pumping, he parks. He gets out, walks over and goes "You going to be mounting that front plate soon?" lol. I'm like ya, just waiting for the bracket to come in. And he's like good. And walks back to the car and sits there. Twice in like 9 hours in 2 days I got cops on my ass about the front plate. Damn I rock hard.

Since this is on the topic of getting pulled over about dumb shit.
What about one of my homeboys used to have an Evo 8, all stock, then one day he got pulled out by another retard cop. The cop told him that his stock exhaust and stock carbon fiber wing were illegal...:greddy2:

LMAO. What did the cop say when he told him it was stock?

One of the lakes in SC is down like 8ft and has a lot of dry places on it. Well people road 4wheelers on it and the DNR wrote them 1000$ tickets for it. They went to court and the DNR had no laws to back up the tickets so they were thrown out. What kind of bullshit is that?

I dont even think cops know 1/2 the rules they just make up BS. F*CK them all

The cop tried to act like he was right, of course. Then my boy was like "Well lets go to the dealership and I'll show you."
The cop finally just let him go.

Yeah they just make up BS. Some cops are pretty cool though, I've got by with some shit.

So if you're in IL, don't go to Darien with a "modifed" car. They're dicks.

Darien is a hotspot for street racing. So if your in a modified car and you don't want attention from the cops, stay away from Darien, especially at night.

Cops in Darien are jerks anyway. I was at the New China Buffet in Darien (GREAT resturant) and I got a ticket for an expired registration sticker. OK, expired sticker, I forgot to renew it and it was 2 days overdue. But I was in my old 90 Civic Hatchback. On that car in order to see the sticker you need to stop behind the car, get out of your car, and bend/kneel down pretty far to see it. The cop must have been looking for expired stickers since it was a new month. Jerk.
