hey i have a clicking sound coming from the motor, but only when the engine is cold. after i give the engine some time to warm up, the sound goes away. i think that it may be a bent valve or something. but i was gettin into the gas a bit passing a friend of mine and he said that it was smokin white and that it smelled like oil. it doesnt run hot or anything, and still has all the power it had before. anyone know what it could be?

a simple first step for checking would be to take the cap where you put oil in off the valve cover while it is making this tapping noise, if it gets louder than its something in the valve train. on my car, it gets a tapping like you described and my father took a stethescope to the different parts and we found that the sound was coming from the egr valves, which is harmless

It is VERY common for the LS1 motor to make clicking/knocking noises upon startup. If I remeber from the old posts on other boards, it was due to thr rods making knocking noises until the temps came up to operating norms. My 99 has done it from day one. Sometimes its louder than others. I have 168,000 miles on the car so far, with lots of track and full speed runs. I wouldn't worry about the noise. Just make sure your temps are normal before romping on it.. White smoke from the tailpipes sounds more like condesation to me, although, if your friend smelled oil...could be a problem there. These motors also have a habbit of burning oil on high speed/low load situations, like 3/4 to full throttle, low gear (2nd or third) at steady speed. So that may have been the smoke.

cool, thats very helpful.... and i did take the cap of the oil fill and revved a little and the noise did not get any louder so it must be the egr valves.
