DSMLink problems!

Ok, I have a 7-bolt motor with a 6-bolt BUILT head, gm-maft, 272's, etc. None of that is the problem.
I got a 95 eprom ecu and dsmlink. The guy that is working on my car, who I am positive is a DSM expert, AND a dsmlink/aem ems expert as well, took the ecu to get it socketed, and then he put the dsmlink chip in.
He hooked the eprom ecu up to the car, and the car runs with it, the only problem is the default tune on the dsmlink makes the car run kinda poorly. So he hooks his laptop up to the ecu(as he has done with other cars many times), and the laptop cant find the ecu. Its like the beta-link connector(what he called it) wasnt even connected. He says it might be a broken ground or a broken soldering point or something that isnt connected INSIDE the ecu that causes the laptop to not start reading the ecu/connector.
He said hes going to get a wiring schematic/diagram of the ecu and see if he can trace the wiring and figure it out. I trust him to figure out the problem, but I just want to know if anyone else might have an idea as to what it might be. I'm positive his laptop and cable are fine. I'm just hoping its not a bad ecu. Could there be a problem with something else in the car, like a short?
