89 firebird 2.8l beats 1st. gen talon tsi, in a race!!

Ok, well me and my dad just finished fixing up my 2.8l firebird. And we were driving down lakeshore, and we hit a light. A 1gen talon tsi awd pulled up, and when the light hit green we raced. I totally blew him out, and even with his awd, i ripped him out of the hole!

At first my tires spun but i downshifted to 2 (automatic), and took off, i ripped him so hardcore :grinyes: and i don't know how..

I know the 2.8's are veerrry slow, but the tsi has 190 hp stock! And how the hell could i match that! The only mods i have are a dynomax super turbo muffler, 180 thermostat, and underdrive pully!! HOW DID I PULL THIS OFF??

I raced until i was at 80 and i was at least 2 car lengths on him and still pullin. Wtf

Ohh and he WAS racing, he popped the clutch at a decent rpm, and he peeled out, because i know someone would have said that he wasnt racing.

I posted this in the firebird forum... how is this possible??

I highly highly doubt it was an awd if he "peeled" out, and he probably sucks really bad at driving. You should've gotten owned.

He wasn't AWD then if he spun his tires... Probably not even a turbo DSM... Trust me... I just got rid of my Firebird a few weeks ago with the 3.1L and there was no comparison to a turbo DSM...

I know man, but hey! thats pretty rediculous.. It's a story to tell the grandchildren when i get old!!:icon16:

and i know for a fact it was turbo, i could hear the bov, unless he was a poser and had those exhaust ones!! lol Well my dad was checking out his wheels when they spun, and he thought it was awd, but oho well what ever is is.

He may have had a CAI, sometimes you could mistake the sound of a CAI for a turbo boosting.

I call BS. I'm not doubting that you outrun a talon, its possible. I just doubt that it was boosted. People used to think my all motor spyder was turbo because they claimed they could hear the "blow off valve". So yea.

I've broken traction plenty of times with my old stock clutch. Although there was 6 inches of snow on the ground...

I always won out of the hole against my buddy with his old LT1. But by the end of first gear he was gone.

god i don't even know where to begin on this one.
Therefore I'm not going to
I don't think your grandchildren are gonna be too impressed with this race anyways./

Yeah, this thread FTL. I've broken traction in my car as well, but it definately didnt make a noise. If he had enough power to really break them loose AWD he would have burned you like yesterday's blunt. Think about it dude, a fuckin automatic tiny ass V6 firebird is not going to beat an AWD turbo period.

I seriously doubt you raced an awd or even a turbo for that matter. With a 5k dump, my gsx barely chirped the tires and I was gone. There's no way a car like that would have been able to withstand an awd launch. As far as 2wd any turbo would have murdered you, and as I think about it, since it was a 1g, I don't see you beating a N/A 4g63. The 2.6 came with 130hp to the crank, and IIRC that's about the same as the 4g63 N/T, but with alot less weight. I'm not trying to rag your car, I just don't see it being possible. The only thing I can think of is you ran across some ass clown in the 4g37 1.8, which, probably in good condition, puts out a very impressive 80 hp to the wheels.

the 2.8 is one of the most horrible motors ever made by GM and matching it up with a automatic transmission , doubting it was a 700r4 , and adding 3300 lbs to it gives it a horrible acceleration rate , terrible power and a over all lack of general performance..135 hp, 160 tq.

If you did race a 1st gen and beat it , the 1st gen was on it's last leg and on its way out the door.

True that , since i have a full length CAI , it has a whistle to it when WOT and I get asked all the time if its turbo :/

maybe you guys are right.. it prolly was a cai.. But still, its pretty impressive to beat anything with a 2.8l.. but i still could have sworn i heard a bov.

I didnt even think a 2.8 compared to a 2.0 n/a in a talon.. Expecially an auto one.

Remember the 1gens also came with the 1.8l. Those are incredibly slow

I bet that talon had ZERO compression in all 4 cyclinder  .

Well...TECHNICALLY it wouldn't have ran with zero compression in all 4 cylinders, but it's okay, we still love you killa. haha :p

As long as it's a Grain Belt Premium, then yes, I do.

Haha I just drank grain belt last night. This thread is funny, first its a awd turbo, then its turbo for spinnin the tires, then its n/a with a turbo sounding cold air intake, then its a 1.8 pos, then its got no compression...

I wouldn't go bragging to the grandkids about this story haha, it was probly a 37 year old mom in a taurus

Mt TB since I bored it out has a whistle to it now which makes it sound like a turbo which is really loud and pronounced when you're outside the car or with the windows open. And no there's no leaks it in ;)

The CAI doesn't sound like a BOV though.

The whistle is from the air traveling over the hole in the TB for the IAC. I guess rounding the edges a bit makes the whistle go away. I don't think I got that when I ported my TB, but I haven't taken it out yet so I guess I don't really know.

My old one never did that though. I kept doing vacuum leak tests and all just to try to find out what it was. I even swapped it out and tried it again and didn't do it.

It's in the paragraph after the 4th set of pictures. It's towards the bottom of the paragraph where it comments on it.

Ah. Makes sense now. Not worth it IMO to round it out. Doesn't make a difference neither way. Does sound cool from outside the car though. lol.
