1,000 for a new clutch and trans? You may as well just bend over as well.
Seriously though... with the car off reach down between the battery and the distributor (more toward the passenger side of the car) and you'll see a screw type thing with a cable coming out of it. If you follow that cable it goes all the way to your dash and to the clutch pedal. You can follow it from the dash but if you have no clue which cable it is you may end up pulling out your speedo cable or something... haha. Anyway, turn that screw lever to the right to tighten your clutch pedal or to the left to loosen it. This may or may not help you with getting into gears easier. GL
BTW, welcome to the forum...

if you slide easily into every gear, and it just won't go into reverse at all, no grind or anything, try two things.. first, drain/change the oil from the tranny, but don't replace it w/ motor oil, use GM synchromesh fluid (3 quarts I think)
Second thing, with the axles still in the tranny, use a deadblow hammer and beat the hell out of the casing of the transmission around the differential area... it could be that the detent that locks out reverse is sticking.. that's what happened to my DX tranny, but I chose not to fix it, and replaced it w/ a HF tranny, which you can't do, b/c you're B-series... also, if you end up needing a new tranny, go find a '90 or newer teg, and get the tranny out of it... you're looking at about $100-$200 dollars, from a junkyard, plus time, and $130 for a stock clutch kit.. which is much better than $1000

I know it's freakin expensive, but even if he has to change the tranny out, he can just drain it and put it in the new tranny too, and it (almost) never has to be changed again after that... according to GM, it's good for up to 150,000 miles. (sales rep)

Don't use Syncomesh. It may seem like it makes your trans feel better, but its just a mask. It has friction additives in it that allow the syncros to slow the input shaft down easier but in turn wears the syncros out even more. Not that, that even matters since reverse is a non syncroed gear, its straight cut instead of bevel. Thats why reverse always whines.
Use what the factory does, 10w30 or honda MTF. And no way in hell would I go 150,000 miles on the same fluid, thats like going 10,000 miles on a oil change because the company says it ok with these new syntheics.

I'd never do it either, but that's what they say. and GM uses Synchro in corvettes, w/ no problem... so I don't see why you think it would make the problem worse.. if it gets me another 50k miles on the tranny before I have to rebuild/replace it, good enough for me. it's called delaying the inevitable, just like putting more of the same ole' shit in it is.

Of course its a mask, it cant rebuild your synchro. But it got me another 15k on my leaking crx tranny till I sold it and I never had another grinding problem. But you are right, reverse is non synchrod and straight cut.

the only reason I suggested syncromesh was that if the reverse lockout is stuck, the synchromesh will help loosen it.. or might.. other than that, it's the deadblow hammer... which I've personally done before.

Yeah but they are made for it, honda's are not. Its going to wear the synchros out faster due to the added friction materials in the fluid.

speaking of synchro's, has anyone ever used carbon-kevlar? do they actually make gear changes stiff? I've heard alot of crap about them... but I've been told that if you're going to rebuild the tranny, and you're going for performance, that it's worth it even though you might lose some minor streetability... just wondering if it's true or not.
