Transmission Fluid Check Procedure

Hello Ramheads,

I hate to admit this, but I am uncertain as to the correct procedure for checking the transmission fluid. The dipstick on my van has both a COLD and HOT. I am assuming that when the transmission case is cold, that the fluid level will be at COLD. I am also assuming that when the engine has reached its operating level that the fluid will read HOT. This morning when I check the level (engine was cold), the fluid read up to the HOT. These does not seem right. Someone please mentor me.

Thank You. :banghead:

Engine should be running. I always cycle through all the gears, finishing in park before checking. Remove dipstick, wipe off, and reinsert. Fluid should be at cold mark or a little above. Hot is about 180 degrees.

Thank You Peterjon1.

The tale of two cities. I own a Ford Taurus and a Grand Caravan. I like my Ford because it keeps me busy repairing it and I like to work on cars. Here is the deal.

My local Ford dealership will not let you get close to the technicians. You are not even allowed to walk through their shop. :screwy: However, with my local Dodge dealership, you can go down there and talk to a Tech or even phone and ask to speak with one. It is really fun to go to my Dodge dealership.

Anyway, I called the Tech at Dodge and he stated that the vehicle transmission does not necessarily need to be hot, but rather filled. Just as Peterjon1 explained.

Start the engine. Put in reverse, then put it in forward and then back to park and check with the engine running. I honestly did not know this.

Thank You
