Anyone Ever Grown Tobacco?

Hey guys, I was curious as to whether anyone had ever grown any tobacco. And no, I dont give a shit if you've grown another smokable plant, and if you have keep it to yourself... I dont want that shit cluttering up our forum. I am definately not a big smoker, at most I smoke once a week but lately its been more like a twice a month kinda thing. I dont inhale, just puff cigars and pipes.

Well, I thought last semester about trying to find tobacco seeds and growing some of my own. My floormates all kinda talked me out of it, they didnt figure it would be easy to get a hold of them or grow them, especially up in bum-fuck Minnesota. The thought came to me again today and I decided to do a little checking... $2.20 for a pack of 40-50 seeds . How many plants each pack delivers is unclear, it sure as hell wont be 40-50, but I figured the 45 or so seeds should give me a couple plants and each plant should give me a few pounds of tobacco atleast depending on variety. Obviously I am going to have to sell/give some away as I am still going on my 1.5 ounce pack I bought in early September.

There was a few different kinds of tobacco, I figured my buddy and I would get like a 15'x9' patch ready out on his grandparents land and just grow a few plants (they only need 3 feet between each plant). I figured maybe 1-2 for wrappers (outer cigar), 1-2 for binders (secondary cigar), then probably like 4-6 various other plants for filler and pipe tobacco. If we get hardcore about this we may till a bigger plot and grow a bunch of plants and sell some roll your own cigarette tobacco to friends, who knows. No matter what its not like we're going to make a huge amount of money, but I figured it would be enough to cover the next pack of seeds.

So anyone ever done this before? What about rolling cigars, anyone done that? Or does anyone want some Thor spec high grade cigars and/or pipe tobacco? :D

My friend lives on a farm and I helped him a few year putting tobacco in the barns and shit like that. I would advise you not to do it. Growing the plants wouldn't be that hard but the tobacco you buy isin't strait off the plant. It has to cure in a high temp barn for a few weeks. Then is shipped out to some other place and who knows what they do there. You could take it off the plant, dry it out and smoke it. But I doubt it would be like anything you buy.

Why are you trying to do this? You said you only smoke occastionally, wouldn't it just be easier to buy a pack of tobacco. I mean 1.5oz, how much can that cost.

Dude, its not about cost, ha ha ha. That $3 pack has lasted me this whole semester so far and will probably until Christmas break. I was just thinking about doing it for fun.

I think you should have some success. If I remember correctly tobacco is a pretty easy plant to grow, and if I remember correctly that it grows in a multitude of environments.

And hey! What's wrong with the other kind of plant?

What other people do is their business and I frankly dont give two shits if they do it or not, I just dont want to hear about it in my tobacco plant thread. :)

I did do a google before I asked, thats a pretty good site, good info on curing. I just talked to my buddy, I think we're going to buy a few different varieties and only grow like 4 plants in his back yard... just enough to make some cigars. We're also going to brew our own beer, we're going to have to have a night when we sit down and drink a few of OUR beers and smoke one of OUR stoagies. :)

I thought about brewing my own beer last semester after talking to a kid in class about it. After looking into it, I decided it was a better idea to finish school before I dedicated ALL of my time to booze (drinking AND making), so I decided not to do it. Who knows, maybe someday Thompson's "American for "Wasted"" Brewing Co. will be just as big as Anheisur-Busch.

Coffee beer? Ah I miss those shows lol.

Anheisur-Busch might be a little far. But if one day I see your beer competing with Sam Adams, hell ill have a story to tell the grandkids lol
