Disc Brake Clips

Does anybody know the purpose of two (top/bottom) metal clips on the front disc brake pad/caliper assemblies? I have always put them back in after replacing the disc pads but this last time, one was missing so I left them both off. Will there be any negative consequences for not using them?

Are you refering to the W type of clips? If so, they are to help separate the calipers and keep them from rubbing on the rotor.

The clips are about 3 inches long by maybe 1/4 inch wide and there are two; one at each end of the caliper. I took a picture but can figure out how to insert it here...
