95 Galant S Trans Filter location

:banghead: My trans is slipping in all gears and the filter has never been changed. Second owner, first didn't take good care of the vehicle. I need to know what is involved in the changing of the filter and if it could fix my issue. I do know that adding a cleaning solution like sea foam tranny cleaner restores all gears and smooths shifting.

i know from experience that the newer galants (03) have a filter but you actually need to take the trnny out and dissasemble most of it to get to it. This is really not a servisable part for the home mechanic. The pan on the front of the tranny is not worth taking off since there is no rubber gasket to put back on to seal it. The cover is sealed with RTV hi temp silicone and causes more grief than its worth. If you have small pieces of metal or metallic looking trans fluid on the dipstick i would take it to a tranny shop and have them reverse flush the system. This will remove any debris and clean the inner filter at the same time. If the fluid looks decent and doesn't smell relly burnt then i would flush the tranny and refill myself. Also i think that your tranny uses a special fluid a SP fluid, at least the new ones do. Good Luck.

I have had a flush done, no metal shavings where found. The fluid looked and smelled old. I was told by the mechanic to have the trans filter changed and to add seafoam to the tranny when filling it up. The filter I have has a seal to replace the one that is on there. When they flushed my tranny, they had to use the coolant lines. I think just as they left tranny fluid in my cooling system, it may have done the same in the tranny, left some anti-freeze in my tranny. When it combines and heats up it turns into a thick sludge and sticks to everthing. That is my take on my filter situation. That sludge may have clogged it up. In the last week I have had 2nd and 3rd gear free up and shift again. Before it would have to hit 5,000 RPM to shift.

You can try to take the front cover off and replace the tras filter but i dont think that you will see a filter when you take the cover off. Trans filters can be purchased for the newer models also but it doesen't mean that your model will be the one that has the external filter. Maybe worth a try. About the sea foam, I would check the label and see if they recommend it to be use in a tranny flush. I know that it works very well for cleaning injectors but i have never added this to my oil or trans oil before. Also how would the trans fuid get into the coolant and vise versa???:uhoh: The radiator is bad if the fluids are mixing because the coolant and tranny fluid both run through the radiator. So if there is a crack internally in the radiator then they would mix. which would be bad. Good Luck. write back if any more questions.
