As the title states, I'm trying to find a list of the countries that allow civilians to carry/own firearms.
The only ones I'm sure of so far are:
Abkhazia
America
Australia
Canada
Israel (handguns only)
South Africa, thanks Freakray
Switzerland

Countries where firearms are illegal:
UK & Ireland
Taiwan
China

I've been searching the web and can't find a good listing, can anyone help?
Thanks,
Steve

@Mods: I'm not sure if I placed this in the right place, so please move if necessary. Thanks
Edit, I'll be editing this thread whenever someone adds a country or when I find more info on the web.. TIA for any replies.

South Africa - must be registered though to be legal.

Mexico places a .380 caliber restriction on its handgun owners. Nothing more powerful.
Canada has various hand gun laws which differ from province to province. Correct me if I’m wrong.

and on a related topic, what's your thoughts on the push for an actual legal definition to your right to bear arms?

New Zealand allows you to own firearms if you have a licence.

You need a special endorsements to own Military Style Semi Automatics (MSSA's) and they must still be restricted (smaller mags etc).

You need another endorsement to own a pistol and must be a regular shooter with a club before even getting your endorsement.

It's illegal to carry a pistol or restricted weapon without approval from the Police (so basically it's illegal to carry).

If you don't have a firearms licence you can still use certain firearms under supervision of someone who does.

And very hairy legs they are, I thought this thread was about bare arms. I happen to have a concealed weapon permit so you never know, there just might be something up my sleeve.

Thanks to the Second Amendment. You think if a bear was coming at you it would stay concealed for long? :grinno:

BTW - Why do you need a concealed weapons permit?

Actually it was a condition of employment. I was working as the GM at the local horse race track and due to the large amount of wagering we had security arrangements that included two armed, uniformed, security officers that roamed the area and three armed employees, one in the money room, one at the front door in the the programs booth and myself. Each of us also were also licensed and trained for non-lethal alternatives such as mace and tasers which we also carried. I, myself in three tours of duty in service to my country and all my years of packing, have luckily only been forced to resort to lethal force during military action.

P.S. the link to packing.org doesn't seem to be working. I'll email the sherrifs dept and see what's going on since I found the link there.

In Japan the only gun a civilian can own is a shotgun for hunting. And the owner must go thru a vigorous licensing procedure to get it:

"A prospective gun owner must first attend classes and pass a written test.[7] Shooting range classes and a shooting test follow; 95 per cent pass.[8] After the safety exam, the applicant takes a simple 'mental test' at a local hospital, to ensure that the applicant is not suffering from a readily detectable mental illness. The applicant then produces for the police a medical certificate attesting that he or she is mentally healthy and not addicted to drugs.[9]

The police investigate the applicant's background and relatives, ensuring that both are crime free. Membership in 'aggressive' political or activist groups disqualifies an applicant.[10] The police have unlimited discretion to deny licenses to any person for whom 'there is reasonable cause to suspect may be dangerous to other persons' lives or properties or to the public peace"

Australia has a gun ban on certain guns and their crime rates are up.Same as the UK and Canada, crime rates up and gun bans do not work.Canada has a hand gun ban.One organization to join is the NRA who protect your gun rights and it is worth it.I am a member of the NRA and so is my father.Washington D.C has a gun ban, courts overturned it and will go to the supreme court about next year.Their crime rates are up including murders.
