'99 - Running lights wont turn off

hey all -

Last night i turned off my '99 and took the key out of the ignition, all was fine until i opened the door and the bell started dinging with a speed which would indicate that i had left the key in the ignition. Huh, thought i, what's up with that. so i put the key back in the ignition (but did not turn it)

the dinging noticably slowed (perhaps halfway as fast as the "you left the keys in the ignition" and "you are starting the car" dings) - i took the key out, and it speed back up again. so i started the car. the dinging slowed to the "starting up" dings, then stopped all together ... mind you, all this time the drivers door is open.

here's the rub though... when i turn off the car, pull the key and close the door... the running lights and interioir "driving" lights never turn off. this was about 11pm last night and 12 hours later, they are STILL on [though i am impressed by the battery life]

i don't even know where the battery is to unhook it :\ (I'm a moron...My wife found the battery and fuse boxes)

can anyone help this poor michanically declined aurora owner - i love my car but if this can't be fixed, i don't know what to do :\

Sounds like your multifunction switch needs cleaning with some electrical contact cleaner which is available at Radio Shack in a spray can. Search these forums for "multifunction switch" and you will find complete instructions on how to clean it while still on the car (with battery disconnected).

Where is the MFS on a 99 Aurora? I have read several posts re: cleaning it, but they are on other vehicles and they all say it is under the cover of the steering column....Is it the same with the Aurora (being under the cover of the steering column) or is it under the back seat where the battery and fuse boxes are?

i went to auto zone and looked at the hayes manual and found that the multi function switch is actaully the turn signal/cruse control switch arm. i don't think that that is the issue - here is why: all lights work as they are supposed to when the car is on. the high/low/and sentinal all work as they should. cruise control works, &tc.

no, i think the problem is in the ignition switch or some component which manages what it does with the signals from the ignition - none of the items which are malfunctioning are affected by the multi function... it acts like the car is on, during the day time when you open the door.

you guys know more then me, i will grant that, and i will try cleaning the MFS but can anyone think of any other reason?
