Remember my old Sony DSC V1? The one I took over 7000 photos with, of which many many turned up on AF?

Well it's fucked. My only guess is that it got way too much booze on it at our end of uni party, because the iris won't open properly and the whole lens housing just struggles to extend when I turn it on.

I got over 3 years brilliant use out of it so I'm not too gutted, might take it in and see if they can open it and clean it, but I'm also shopping for a new one.

So, help me out here.

Had my eye on a Canon EOS 400D, but any other recommendations? Any other brands?

^Psh, 40D! Or 5D MkII when it comes out. No serious, 350D or 400D is quite nice. It's small and compact. IF you want to shoot motorports, duh, then 30D or 40D. Just read my PM and follow.

Oh, and my V1 shot motorsports just fine :p

Basically I'm looking for a good entry level DSLR at a good price. I'll probably be getting it at cost price (or at least damn cheap compared to retail - gotta love hookups) but I wanna know what I should be looking for. Love the pictures Canons take.

Canon 20D for $500 used and Sigma 70-200 F2.8 for $600-$700 used with 1.4TC $180 new or $130-$150 used.

Or instead of the F2.8 which is the best for sports since it's fast and will dow ell in overcast, Canon's 70-200 F4 can be had $500 used and can still use a 1.4TC maintaining AF. Also arguably one of Canon's sharpest lens out doing some primes.

Oh right, if you couldn't guess, I'm _aravena on there.

I used to have a Nikon D100 and I traded it in for one of the Canon S series cameras (currently an S5 with 430EX external flash). It has a built in 12x optical zoom and takes great 640x480 30fps video with stereo sound.

My camcorder gathers dust now. Admittedly the pictures from an SLR with a quality lens will look much better but I'm happy with the photo quality from this hybrid camera.

I have a hard time selling that to people because of the 70-300 IQ. Sigma 70-300 APO is way awesomer. Yes, awesomer.

Oh, the other kit. At least it has USM. Apparently ya'll have the 18-55 IS and will get the 55-200 IS before us.
