Shock advice

I am turning to the experts here. I have a 1990 Cherokee Laredo 4WD and need some advice on shocks. I do not do a ton of off road but some so I need something that is good on highway and lite off roading. Also, the steering is what I would consider loose. I have never had a Jeep or driven one so it may be that is the way they are, but it seems a little too loose. Any suggestions on tightening it up some?

I'd think that with the driving habits you mentioned, any good quality aftermarket shock would be fine. Gabriel, Monroe, etc. You probably don't need to go with a special Rancho shock.

As far as the front end being "loose", it could be any number of steering parts, from the steering box itself, to the tie rod ends or the ball joints at the wheels. If you're not mechanically inclined, a reputable alignment shop should be able to locate the loose parts. If you're mechanically inclined, you could jack up the front end, and have someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock and look for any shifting/movement, and also see if you can move the wheels left and right, while having the same helper look to see where the slack is in the system.
