Absinthe in the US?

I have heard rumors that absinthe is going to be legalized in the US for the first time since 1912. I tried googling and did not find much on it. Saw the same thing on the Colbert Report  Has anyone else heard anything about this? Has anyone here tried it?

overrated and burdened with its own myth.
It's a hard drink to mix because the flavour is so strong and if you're going to drink it to enjoy the flavour, you really don't need to get anything more than the 40% (usually red although some green varieties are 40%), especially seeing as that extra 30% is more often than not, added alcohol anyway.
There are also too many variations of what you might call absinthe. They range from small batch, properly distilled stuff that is near enough made in the same way as it used to, to mass produced properly distilled, to herbal macerated stuff that is really pretty nasty.
In short, if anyone ever offers you "proper" absinthe that they claim to not be "supermarket shit", be careful.

it's not that.
it's more because even among the readily available ones, there are lots of differences.
Distilling the stuff takes a lot of equipment and a lot of skill and it is also just as acceptable to make absinthe by soaking or otherwise infusing the oils from the herbs into alcohol.
Distilling gives you the better drink.
I can't think of any non-distilled ones that I've had bar a mild 30-35% one from Prague.
On the other hand, I've got a bottle of 70% (distilled) that I would happily sip over lots of ice.
If you're really desperate, I can get you a few small bottles to try......
Not that I condone smuggling of contraband.

My friend brought back some that was 35-40% and the green kind. Tasted pretty crappy, and no hallucinations, but for some reason it did make us drunk faster

I've had it heaps of times, my best mate is Czeck and he brought me back a bottle of the 70% top notch stuff last year.
A group of us went out to a Czeck restaurant last Saturday and I had one with the proper sugar cube melted into it too.
Seriously - it's not that great. If you want to get pissed really, really quickly then drink a good scotch. If you want to hallucinate, drop a tab of acid.
If you do both at once, the effect will be much more pleasant than drinking a bottle of Absinthe.

You can find absinthe in the us. About 4 years ago ex of mine went home to philadelphia and came back with 3 bottles she got from a liquor store. The guy who worked there didnt know what it was or anything he just knew it had always been there.
A few shots worth and you will feel pretty loopy. Personally I would stop after a few, you have a good feeling about everything. We decided we were going to get crazy and polish off one of the bottles in one sitting one night. Bad idea. Im not really sure what happened but I know we got sick because we both woke up on the bathroom floor naked and had puked in the toilet....fun times...

92.7% of people who say they've had hallucinations after drinking absinthe have jut forgotten that it has a high alcohol content.
random percentage made up by me but you get the point.
let's see you drink half a litre of vodka straight and not get any effects.
that's not to mention that the hallucinagenic effect of wormwood oil has never been proven.

^Eh...true. Only with the hallucinogens is it even remotely worth it. w/o, taste is horrible IMO and ya need to down a few shots of something else first. Living in Italy can clear up your view on things. Pretty much anything that's not allowed or hard to get in the US.

Americans always want what we can't have. If they bring it here, it will be a novelty for a while and then we'll abuse it just like everything else. BUT if the FDA allows Absinthe to be sold legally here with its reputation for hallucinogenic effects and I still can't buy a frickin dime bag without going into full covert ops mode, something is wrong. I almost wish they would just figure out how they'll make money on weed so they can legalize it, but then the prices will skyrocket.

Wanting what you can't have isn't an American thing, it's a human thing.
For the Western Democratic Governments of the world to legalize weed would be akin to admitting they have made up propoganda and lies to justify their "war on drugs".
Did you see in the news the Dutch want Cannabs legalised as a Medicine, and it has a good chance of happening?

this is a comment i just don't understand. why the hell would prices skyrocket if weed was legalized? i've also heard people say that the quality will be crap. the problem with these statements is that they don't make economic sense. if the government legalizes weed and brings out an expensive product that is of the same or lesser quality than what's available, people won't buy it and will just keep buying the illegal stuff. the only way for them to make money is to come out with a better and/or less expensive product. i think if they were to legalize marijuana you would have: 1) a standard product or a standard of quality allowing you to know what you're buying before you buy it, 2) better quality in general, and 3) lower prices overall. not to mention you can have actual scientists working on making stronger and better stuff because they'll be allowed to study it and release their own strains that are better and stronger than what's out there.
also, i've tried "absynth" but i'm not sure if it was real or not. the girl said it's real but she's not the sharpest knife in the droor so i can't be sure. honestly i didn't mind the taste, i didn't sip it though, i was shooting it (i was pretty drunk at that point) and it was 60% stuff so it burned pretty well but i liked it better than some of the weaker alcohol i've had.

I agree that the quality would be way better for the average smoker to access, but I seriously doubt the American government would make it any cheaper than it is now. They would need to make substantial profit to justify the decision to legalize it in addition to the added costs for prosecution and housing of individuals caught selling weed without a license. The penalties for selling weed would become just as stiff as for selling cocaine because you are then taking business away from Uncle Sam and he can't have that :nono: People get arrested for weed all the time and get let off with cupcake charges. Legalization of the drug would make posession legal, so distribution would have to move up the food chain for prosecutors. After all, states eceive funding dependent on how many bodies they have in cells, so you can't cut out tht large a chunk of the intake without ramping up convictions somewhere else. Thats just my prediction.... but it aint happenin anytime soon anyway

It's legal in Australia.
I've drank Green Fairy Absinthe, it's 60%, 500ml and I paid about 65 bucks for it.
The hallucination drug is called Wormwood, and you need, I think (don't quote me) over 200mg of the drug. In the Legal Australian version of the drink, there is only 20mg of the drunk in the drink because of standards.

a: Let out
b: Let out and apologised to

but the problem is that if they tax it and it gets more expensive, people are just going to buy the illegal stuff. the only way for the government to make money on weed is to come out with a competitive product. if they can't compete with what's out there because their product is too expensive, they won't make money.

Thats why jailing those that sell it illegaly would become more of a priority. As Oz pointed out, the people currently in jail for posession withOUT intent to sell would have good reason to believe they should be let out. But they would probably stay put since they were convicted of posession when it was still a crime. Plus, anybody who is in jail for any longer than 30 days is probably not in there because they only had some weed on em. Posession of weed that could be reasonably labeled as "personal use" gets a slap on the wrist and probation. Posession with intent to sell (over an oz, bagged up, scales, large amounts of cash) is when you get a stiffer penalty, but still its usually just a few days in jail until you go to arraignment and are released with "first-timer" probation.

Tobacco is an addictive product. The tobacco companies "tweaked" the product to make it more addictive and now people will pay whatever it takes to keep using the product. I had a patient tell me that he bought a cabin and some land with the money he saved for a few years after he managed to quit smoking.
Shoot, even only one pack a day at $7.50 a pop amounts to $52.50 a week. Imagine a 2 or 3 pack a day smoker.
The gov't. makes some damn good tax money off tobacco and no one views tobacco in the same light as other drugs, even though the addiction is stronger than heroin. Such a deal for Big Tobacco.

Exactly. Tobacco is one of the top contibutors to death and sickness in America, but somehow its legal. I have a few friends who have been "quitting" for the past 6 or 7 years yet they continue to spend at least $50 a week on that shit. I started and stopped smoking cigarettes in the 7th grade. Even back then, I knew it wasn't worth it.
