I have a 1995 Olds Cutlass Convertible with a 3.4 liter engine, obd 1 plug w/o b terminal so flashing codes on dash cant be done. The check engine light is on and I need to know the following:
1. How can I retrieve the trouble codes? And clear the light?
2. Is there a obd 1 reader that will interface properly with this vehicle(one that does not cost a bazzillion bucks?)
3. Are there any other quirks I need to know with this car?

Welcome to AF!
Your 95 Cutlass is a hybrid ODB I & II.
You'll need the dealer or someone who can scann for these
as it takes a special scan tool on the hybrid OBD systems.
Yeah, big PITA.

Yes, it's an hybrid ODB I & II. It's also called OBD 1.5.
You are lucky. There is a way to you to diagnostic your car for free, without using OBD scan tools. By jumping ALDL connections. But this trick work only on OBD 1 and OBD 1.5. Not for OBD 2.
In this Website, it will explain how to do it: http://s-series.org/component/option,com_tech_article/Itemid,/item,60/task,item/
You can also use a striped wire to do this test. Instead of the paper clip. You must connect the wire to pin 5 and 6.
There is also a list of the definition of the trouble codes in this Website.

Thankx for the info serge_saati , and Welcome to AF.
I've never had luck with that method as the codes are very vague.
I always had to use the scan tool. :(

Ok, but I just check up the Cutlass Supreme 95 of my father today, and I realize that is a pure OBD1. With the 12 pins socket. So we were mistaken, it's not an hybrid. Tekwiz was right.
If the flashing trick doesn't work, you (Tekwix) must use the GM OBD1 code reader. This one is very innexpensive. A new one cost 40$. You can also buy it at eBay from 20$. Search for "GM code reader".

Make sure that code reader will actually read codes on your Oldsmobile. I also searched on eBay and seen that one, and under the list of GM cars, I did not see the Olds Cutlass Supreme. :uhoh:

They don't show the Cutlass Supreme 1995, because the seller was not sure if 1994 and 1995 models are OBD1. So he doesn't want to take the risk to recommand it.
But me I'm sure that it will work on 1995 Cutlass Supreme. Because I know that it's OBD1.

I open the user manual of this GM code reader, and I realize that it doesn't work on Cutlass Supreme 1995. And it uses pin A and B for the diagnostic.
Here is the user manual link: http://www.iequus.com/downloads/manuals/gmcre.pdf
But I found a scanner that it works on this car. It's the Actron SUPER AutoScanner CP9145. It needs the Actron GM OBD I ALDL Cable. It's made specially for 1994 and 1995 GM with 12 pins connector without the B terminal.
Here is it: http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16150
Here is the faq: http://www.actron.com/faq_detail.php?pid=16152&id=18
It is sold at Amazon at 150$ with the Actron CP9127 AutoScanner ALDL Cable.

I truely doubt the Actron SUPER AutoScanner CP9145 will work either. I have a trunk load of scan tools and NONE would work for my daughters 95 Cut supreme(hybrid).
I had to buy a GM Tech II scantool for these models and all the other specialty things it can do, around $2500 Used ! :banghead: But it paid for its self in no time.
I've heard ,sometimes you can find them GM tools on fleabay but I havnt seen any there.
Good Luck guys

You are true, at this Webpage it confirms that the CP9145 and CP9150 doesn't work for this car: http://www.actron.com/media/categories/GM_ALDL_Coverage_Chart_CP9127.pdf
Definitively, it's impossible to diagnostic this car ourself without paying the price of the car twice.

I think you have misinterpreted the info in the link you posted for the 9127 CABLE. (Don't confuse the scanner & cable) The cable is compatible (supported by) the 94-95 Cutlass OBDI and the Actron 9145 scanner will read it. The 94-95 Cutlass is simply an OBDI system and uses the 12-pin ALDL connector, not the 16-pin ODBII connector. If it were OBD 1.5, it would have an OBDI ECM with an OBDII connector, but this is not the case here.

No, I have not misinterpreted the info. Read the second chart in this link. It says: These GM 1994-95 vehicles are supported by the Actron SUPER AutoScanner CP9145 and SUPER AutoScanner Kit CP9150:
1994-95 Chevrolet Corvette P 5.7L
1995 Buick Riviera K,1 3.8L
1995 Oldsmobile 88/98 1 3.8L
1995 Chevrolet Camaro K 3.8L
1995 Chevrolet S/T Series W 4.3L
1995 Pontiac Firebird K 3.8L
It doesn't show the 1995 Cutlass Supreme. It explains why xeroinfinity uses a scan tool which cost 3000$ for these cars.
I haven't seen any OBD1 scan tool that garantee to work on this car. I think that is a special edition of OBD1.

Yes, all the cars listed above have OBDII 16-pin connectors and the 9150 comes with that cable also. These cars are in addition to the ones listed in the first list, using the 9127 cable. I use the Matco Tools 9640B professional enhanced scan tool on the 94-95 OBDI.5 and OBD1. It is actually a KAL or Actron built unit. Of course, the CP9150 is cheaper than Matco, however, they use the same cables and software. I know for a fact that my Matco will read the 95 Cutlass, there is nothing special about this car! If fact, to verify what I am saying, I went out to the garage and turned my scanner on, and then selected "1995 Olds Cutlass 3.4" from the menu and it was ready to plug in.
