Noticed the van was leaking at the front drivers side right at the front of the engine. Turned out to be power steering fluid. Took it over to the mechanic and he double checked it. Apparently this is a very commen issue with these things. Now... i would have thought the power steering pump would have been on the passenger side of the motor as that is where and serpentine belt is located??? Anyhoo... how difficult is this to do myself? Its a 99 3.8L... i've noticed the 3.3 and 3.0 requires disconnecting the exhaust... is the 3.8 the same? He quoted me 2 hours of labour to do it.

Thanks

I don't recall the exact routing of the lines - is this a broken PS fluid line, or is the rack leaking, or how is the PS pump the culprit, given the leak clear over on the driver side?

i dont know that it is the pump... maybe its the rack? Either way it was on the frontn drivers side. The guy at the shop said its the pump... perhaps he meant rack. said it would be about 450-500 cdn parts and labour to fix tax in. I pickup up some stock leak today to see if that helps at all. i was trying to figure out how it could be the pump when it was leaking on the drivers side... lol! however, its been in the driveway for about 6 hours now and no leaks.... so who knows

This is a common problem , when you live a a high salt area the power steering case rusts thru and the case starts getting porous it starts leaking right thru the metal case , had this happen on my 96 Voyager .

I have a 1999 and had the same problem about 2 months ago. It was one of the lines that goes from the pump to the rack. It was leaking on the passengers side where the line changed from rubber hose to mild steel. it was leaking at the joint as over time the rubber starts to perish, especially here in canada.

The line was about $25.00. Replacement was not as bad as I thought it would be. Where the line connects to the rack is accessible from the top if you take the Battery/air box out. It is right behind the transmission and can be accessed from the engine bay.

Took about an hour to do the job. Hope this helps.
