Runs but wont restart

1994 GMC K1500 sierra 4x4 5.7 V8 auto.
101K miles.
It starts up great but once I drive for a bit and shut it off, it wont restart. it turns over, battery is full, just replaced the fuel pump and filter thinking that was it. the condition is worsening the longer I let it go. Now, it dies while driving. I pulled up to a red light and it refused to start, same story, full battery etc. I dont know if it could be the coil, plugs, wires, distributor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure, but I think the 94 has a Fuel Preasure Regulator. If it does you may want to replace that.

You need to do some more troubleshooting.

When it won't start, do you have spark? Do you see fuel coming from the injectors when it won't start?

Is the check engine light on? Any stored codes? See www.troublecodes.net/GM for check for codes.

I checked the codes, show 12. Which I guess is he normal for no issues.:banghead:

could this just be as simple as plugs and wires? It looks like they are still the factory original parts. Maybe it starts good when its cool but after its hot, the wires cant spark? Maybe even the coil or something. How do I check these parts?

On the TBI engines, the pickup coil inside the dist generates an a/c signal that the ignition module converts to a DC signal. This DC signal is used to fire the injectors. If the pickup coil or ignition module are bad, the truck will not run.

A bad coil or coil wire can also cause a no start condition.

When it does not start, do you have spark? Injectors firing?

OK, the spark is fine, its not getting fuel once it heats up. It has a new fuel pump and filter. What would not allow it to get fuel to the TBI once its warmed up?

This sounds like a bad ignition module to me. It converts the AC signal from the pickup coil to a DC square wave signal that the ECM uses to fire the injectors.

Most parts stores can test the ignition module.

There isnt anything inside the distributor but the rotor. I just replaced the MAP sensor, cap and rotor.

Does your dist have 2 electrical connectors? One is 4 wires, the other 2 wires. If so, the wires connect to the ignition module at the dist.

it does have the two connections at the base of the cap. does that come off or do I need to replace the entire distributor?

It is held down with 2 screws (1/4 in socket I think) and it is also connected to the pickup coil (2 wire connector).

Also note that dielectric grease is used between the module and dist for heat sink.
