speedometer

I have a question regarding the speedometer in my 86 GMC safari.
I have a problem with my speed sensor on my transmission, seems to be that a piece of the cable broke and jammed the gears in it, I have replaced the cable and speed sensor, now when i took the old sensor off the transmission i broke the mount it threads onto.:runaround:
So i took one from a junker at the salvage yard, but it doesn't seem to hold the gear the same way.
So after all this messing around, How hard would it be to replace the old cable system with the electronic system?
And will an astro dash fit into a safari?
I also have an off topic question... I recently bought a series 8000 tank/circulation heater, the brand name on the box is phillips&Tempro. Any suggestions on the best way to install this?

Changing the system over to electronic would not be practical. Too many things would need to be changed: PCM, underhood and under dash wiring, engine controls, fuel delivery system, emission control devices, etc, etc and the list goes on. Better off getting the right part from a boneyard, and repair what's broken on yours.

The reason I asked if the electronic speedo would work is because I have already tried two different mounts that I pulled from the bone yard. :frown:
the mounts I pulled are from 700 r4 transmission's, so im perplexed as to why they wont work, with the old gear or the new one.
Any idea's were to find one?

I also heard that comaro's have the same transmission as the astro/safari's, is this true? How simular are they? can I pull a mount from it?

Sounds like you better try a GM dealer. The 700R4 was used in many different GM vehicles.

I had a simular problem after swapping the 700R4 tranny in my 86 Safari with a rebuilt. I took it to a prefomance tranny shop and they had the right part in their grave yard. The also put in a valve assembly from a later model tranny that totaly changed the shifting for the better. Not sure which year it was from but they told it was the only year that shifted right. Valve pack, speedo gears and new cable cost me about $150. I can always call them and get a part number for the valve assm. if you want.

I might have a fix for the speedo.
Pull the mount from a comaro tranny...
I resently found a tranny from an 86 comaro with 60,000km on it, that I put in the van.
I just dint know there was that much of a difference in the two tranny's.
The local junk yards dont have to many comaros in stock, so thats kinda the problem.
I didnt know there was that much of a difference in the two transmissions.
All in all, a part # would be very much be appreciated.
