Suspension Question

I was reading up on the suspension poll you have on the top and i just had a quick question. It says in there its a bad idea to just get lowering springs, is it really a bad idea, or is it just preferred to do it differently? I know a lot of people just go with springs and I only ask because i really like the way my car rides/feels and i would just like to lower it, and i found some old papers in the glove box showing the dealer put a whole new suspension on the car before the girl i bought it from bought it from them. She only drove it like 6k before she sold it to me so the suspension is almost brand new with only about 7k on it total... What do you guys think?

It's bad to just get lowering springs without new shocks, the lowering springs will wear out the stock shocks in no time at all. There's nothing wrong with a good set of springs, it's just preferred to get a coilover set or a complete suspension setup, that way you know they will be compatible and give you a nice ride with good performance.

Not trying to prove you wrong, but these tein's say they are made to be used with OEM shocks and they have a 1.5 inch lower... Would they be ok?

Stocks struts WILL blow out if use with lowering springs. It "can" be done and may last for a while if the struts are in good shape now. Lowering springs are stiffer and the stock struts will get torn apart by them.

Any drop that's more than about .75" will need aftermarket shocks if you want to keep the longevity of the life of the shocks. The tein's will work, for awhile, but like silvr said, they'll get torn apart by the shorter, stiffer travel.

You can do it, nobody said they're wouldn't work, but don't be surprised if your shocks go to shit within a year or so.

Its all personal preference. Of course its better to get new, performance shocks to go with the springs but its not nessesary. Yeah it will probably cause the factory shocks to wear out faster, but I don't know. As far as them blowing out like said in previous posts I've never seen it in my experience but that doesnt mean that it couldnt happen. We've had eibach sportline springs on the factory shocks on the camaro for 2 years now and about 30k miles with no problems. My friend has a 95 civic si. It has the same shocks that come on it from the factory. It had lowering springs installed back in about 2000. It was drove for about 5 years after that with no problems what so ever until he wrecked it. So its just up to you. But if you got the extra money go ahead and get nice shocks.

What should i look for when i am picking out shocks and springs? I really dont know much about suspension, so im trying to get as much info as possible to base my decision on.

Thank you for that, you are correct. But the two terms are thrown around so interchangably that people rarely know the difference. Either way, ordering "struts" or "shocks" for his car will still get the same product, they do not make shocks for our cars, so obviously he won't be able to order them and will end up with struts anyways. :thumbsup:
