'91 Jetta...idling high.

My car idles very high (almost 3K) when I start it up in the AM, but is fine after it warms up. I just moved to this part of the country and this new mechanic is saying it's probably the throttle body, but I'm wondering if there is something simpler I should try before replacing it. I have trust issues with new mechanics...

Thanks

I'd try three things:
See if the idle increases when the A/C is turn on, maybe the idle increase is stuck. This isn't likely, but it's worth checking.
Clean your throttle body with carb cleaner.
Clean your idle stabilizer with carb cleaner.

If none of these work, I'd be concerned about the engine control unit (computer). If it is the problem, I've seen them on ebay for under $50.

I remember seeing this problem before on this forum, but I don't remember the solution. Look through old posts, I think Boschman came up with the solution.

It's your idle air valve control (IAVC). It's either bad or there is a crack in one of the hoses going to it. When the car is idling, pinch one of the hoses and the idle should die back down a little.
