I asked that question before and a couple of people said to use Tamiya rubbing compound and Tamiya wax.

Automotive caranuba wax (meguiars, mothers, zymol) will work fine. The only reason why tamiya wax is superior is due to the fact of it being a watery gel that doesn't leave crud in the panel lines.

As for polishing, tamiya compound and a old t-shirt. Any automotive polish that is slightly abrasive and doesn't contain silicone should also work.

Tamiya sand paper 2000 grit
Detail Master polishing abrasives from 4000 to 12000 grit
Tamiya Compound
Modeler's Top Compound
Then, these Tritool Ceramic Compound and Polymer Coat for the final treatment. Super Polishing Cloth is a must have.

THose were all newly released by Hasegawa. Total price for all three is around 3000 yen, or somewhere near that. If you thought the Tamiya modeling wax was expensive.. ;)
