stupid question regarding tools

guys,

I have a strange/stupid question here that i've been wondering about for a while.

Alot of you, when posting photos, i see that you're placing your model, tools and workstation over this "green" rubber surface with white squares gridlock on it. Is this just a piece of rubber for a nice working surface, or is there some great significance to it? reason i ask is because i see ALOT of you have it and i have no idea what it is. Thanks!

It's a crafting cutting matt. It makes a nice worksurface, and it makes a decent photo background (better than a keyboard & monitor  ).

In addition to MPWR's post:
Those cutting mats are 'self healing' which in reality means that you can cut into it hundreds if not thousands of times without it wearing out.
These cutting mats are cheap and easy to clean if dirtyed. I just got a new one that's A2 size (24"*18") for less than 7 bucks as my old one was too small.
Common sizes:
A0: 48" x 36"
A1: 36" x 24"
A2: 24" x 18"
A3: 18" x 12"
A4: 12" x 9"
B5: 9" x 7.5"
Other options I have seen are glass slabs, which can't be cut with a knife.

can you give us some good addresses where to buy such item, I never saw any where I use to buy models or maybe I only don't know which key words work to find it....

thanks :)

I see a lot in arts and crafts stores, hardware stores, and online.
Just search for 'cutting mat' in your favorite online shops or auction sites.

Nothing wrong with a keyboard shot :icon16: (Guilty as charged)

I stole mine from my wife. She got a smokin' deal for it from this company called "stampin' up" but in reality, it was a smokin' RIP OFF!! She paid like $20 for a 12 inch by 18 inch mat. I showed her that they are only like $5 for that size at walmart.

of course, walmart strong-armed some chinese firm employing kids to crank 'em out for two cents apiece, but...

i've been using an old wood cutting board for a couple of years. the "trough" around the edge, where juice from your steak would collect, is a great place to put tools so they don't roll away. :D

I thought I was the only one using a wooden board. :iceslolan It works fine with me. I can solder on it and done need to worry about anything melting. It leave small burnt spots but its nothing to run around :runaround: scared that a fire would ignite.
