grinding noise when turning right

the car starting making a bad grinding noise when i made a left hand low speed turn. I had my dad turn the well will in park, and the top rod coming out of the rack and pinion was vibrating when u turned the wheel. Also the power steering pump makes a humming noise when you turn the wheel from lock to lock. Some im not sure if the power steering pump is about to go out and is not feeding enough fluid or the rack and pinion is bad.

The power steering system on the Taurus is noisy. Always has been, always will be, particularly once a few miles gets on it, so while I can't rule it out as a problem, that's not one of the symptoms.

What year is it? Is it a sedan or wagon? What engine does it have? These things will help us help you, so any further information you have along those lines would be great.

PS usually moans, like other said not likey it. Try doing slow right turning with and without braking. Could be brakes if they are on or wheel bearings if brakes off during turn. Do all of this in quiet dry clean parking lot, so you can alos test for bad cv joints. Really noticable sounds, cliks,clunks, when turning hard right in a circle may indicate your problem. also test everything to the left

1999 taurus sedan 3l v6. it almost sounds like a spring mount, like the cushion is gone and its like something is squeaking. i know its not the ps, it made the same noise before this started. when the car is parked u can turn the wheel to the right and it makes the noise.

I'd try turning the tire parked as you described with someone all over that side with a long rod, pry bar etc. to place it on things to listen for sound, listening to the end of the "listening" device. Also a flexible tube, short piece of hose, or even a rigid pipe or tube can be used to listen in to the location of your noise. My next suggestion is to do this with the front fully elevated. This will give you more access to the underside, but the load off the tires may take away the sound. With this setup you can freely move the tires by hand and no power with engine off. For more access, remove the tire and again test. My first hunch is the top bearing plate of the Mcpherson strut assembly is your problem. Good luck

thats what i was thinking. it makes no sound when you bounce the car up and down only when you turn. there is a rod that goes to the top of the rack and pinion to the control arm. when you turn the tires to the right you can feel the rod kinda vibrate.

Are you referring to the inner tie rod end (metal rod from the side of the rack and pinion to the steering knuckle) or the anti-sway bar end link (white nylon piece from anti-sway bar to the strut)? There's nothing that goes from the top of the rack and pinion to the control arm.

i guess its the inner tie rod end but it goes into the top of the randp.

My universal translator doesn't seem to be working, so I probably like others didn't get that last word. Maybe rack? However, I am also having a tough time following what you are referring to. At this point, your taurus has a different anatomy than what we are familiar. It took me a few seconds of thinking too, but I think that's their abbreviation for rack and pinion -> randp. I agree though, I don't know of anything on a '99 Taurus that would come from the top of the rack and connect to the control arm. The steering shaft will go into the top of the rack, but that doesn't even come close to the control arm. Even the outer tie rod ends don't connect to the control arm, but rather the knuckle which is partially supported by the control arm. However, the inner tie rod end clearly connects to the side of the rack and pinion rather than the top.
