i know there have been serveral threads on this (i searched), but they're all several years old (lots of 'em from 2003), so the answers there aren't terribly relevant, given how fast the technology changes.
i'm looking for a new digital camera, and obviously it's got to have strong macro capabilities. i'm curious to know what you guys use...

Olympus SP-510UZ 7,1 megapix
HAs a truely ballistic macro mode  (almost too good)
Good lens 10x optical zoom.
Useful feature is that it works on regular AAA batteries.
Took me some time to get to know it but now I am happy. Relatively cheap too.
I have noticed that too many megapix is not actually a good thing in a cheap camera. You start getting a lot of noise (or somethng) 6-7 mega is more than adequate IMHO

Pentax Optio S5z.Fairly small, cheap, good macro mode and simple to use.Only slight downside is relatively short battery life, but you can get an AC adaptor for indoor use.

Canon S3 IS. I love it. Two macro settings, super macro down to 0.0 inches. 12X optical zoom, I run it on aperture priority at f8 for best depth of field. Very easy to get great shots. Nice stability control to control camera shake when taking indoor or telephoto shots. Uses standard AAA batteries and SD card. Multi-position LCD screen allows me to hold the camera at extreme angles to take shots from the best vantage point which is often not at eye level.

Hi !
Since almost a year I'm the proud owner of a Panasonic FZ7.
I almost bought the same camera as ZoomZoomMX-5 (the Canon S3 IS). But the price of the Panasonic was what did it for me.
I think those 2 camera's are very much alike. Both 12x optical zoom, etc.
What I like about this camera is that I can adjust everything to my liking. It has a great image stabilising function (allowing razorsharp images at 12x zoom and so-so light conditions).
The main disadvantage of this camera is the fact that it is practically useless from ISO 400 upwards (that's applicable for almost all Panasonic digital camera's...). But I must say, I've never had the need to go above ISO200, so I've no problems with this camera.
If you want to read more about digital camera's you can check out the following site : http://www.dpreview.com
To see some pictures taking with the Panasonic, you can check out my site (link in my sig).
Regards.

Canon PowerShot G7. Quite expensive but fairly easy to use. I think you can get the G9 now though. Only difference between G7 and G9 is the screen size. Everything else seems to be the same.

I use a Fujifilm FinePix S7000, bought it near 4 years ago (I think).. 6.1 mega pixel with RAW capabilities. 1 x Super CCD. Same as Klutz's, mine works on 4 x AAA batteries, letting me change batteries at a cheap price. 1 set lasts around 700 photos without flash, 400 with flash.
19X lens, 6x optical, 3.2 digital. Uses CF and XD cards. Macro and super macro functions let me get up to less than 1 cm away from the object to be photographed. This camera lets me shoot'n'go or tweak the settings for the perfect pic. Manual and automatic settings are both great.
Though I'm biased, I'd suggest you get anything from the new S series .
Steve
PS: Like most other things in life, you need to learn to use your gear. I've seen great photo's taken with crap cameras, and crap photo's taken with extreme professional cameras. Take the time to learn your gear, I took around 2 months playing around to learn my camera fully.

I use a Kodak EasyShare C743. It's 7.1 Megapixels, has decent zoom, and a good macro (most of the time). I usually take pictures in 7.1 MP mode, no zoom, and then crop them to get really good results. It preserves clarity better than zoom and allows you to focus properly. Unrelated to model building, it also has a great video feature with surprisingly good sound quality. It's relatively inexpensive, too.

not to bump a thread from page 3, but i thought i'd note which camera i got in case someone searches for this topic in the future.
i bought a canon powershot G9. 12.1 megapixel, 6X digital zoom and crazy tight macro capability. i'm very happy with it so far, even if i've figured out exactly two of its 25(!) functions.

+1 more or less! I'm on an S2 IS, but it's more or less the same camera.
Just to avoid confusion, it uses AA, not AAA :p

The Canons are great cameras. My wife has a 3S IS and loves it. I prefer my Canon EOS single lens reflex for close up shooting, though. WYSIWYG.
As Steve's, DPReview and all the other experts will confirm, using stability control on a tripod will actually cause the camera to shake. Until I found that out, I couldn't figure out why I kept getting blur. And the blur wasn't even consistent from one image to the next. Then I turned off the IS, and whoa! Sharp images every time!
Another counter-intuitive fact: With digital, the smallest available aperture may give you the greatest depth of field, but it does not produce the sharpest pictures. Go up a stop or two if you can bear to sacrifice the DOF.
The trickiest thing about shooting models is lighting - and especially color temperature. Some time ago there was a long thread on AF. If you're not familiar with the subject, it's worth tracking down.

Hi
I'm using Canon EOS 30D 8. something megapixels with EF-S 17-85 IS USM or a simple 24-75 (old one!) with a special macrolens in front for closeups! Exellent camera - although there is a new model 40D with yet more megapixels and yet more settings ;-)
Usually a 430 flash pointed in whatever direction to prevent too many hard shadows.
