hello im Adam and ive got a problem
i have a 96 ss camaro, second owner, got her 9 years ago with 17000 miles, now 138000 miles, changed transmission and water pump in all 9 years minus basic maint.
Problem: while driving the car sputtered, backfired, and died. pulled over to side and after 10-15 minutes doing nothing under hood, it restarts but dies after about 5 miles. Tow to shop. shop does diagnostic tests a fuel sensor is messed up giving car too much gas. Change out senson stll has same problem. change out plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, check fuel pressure, check fire, seems alright but when started still stalls. drop exhaust to check back pressure issues still stalls. Change out distributer - car runs great.
weeks later same problem get towed to shop. shop runs same tests and finds a faulty distributer - reaplace and problem is fixed so it seems
yesterday same problem get towed to shop AGAIN. currently waiting for call on problems this time. while waiting for tow truck car started and drove it through my neighberhood no problems. park car open hood and was looking around and listening for strange noises and car stalls and cant restart.
is there another reason why a distributer change would temp. fix a problem or can you get a bunch of bad distributers? driving me crazy please any advice would be great...
thanks adam

ok guy called today and hes testing it, trying to get it to stall. says it might be the crank shaft sensor?? Ever heard of that, new to me.

That is a possibility, or it's wiring, that will cause a stall & no start til it cools down.

update: got car today and the shop went with a higher priced distributer because they checked everything they could think of but they believe that the company they buy from just may be making a bad batch of distributers, we shall see. On the good side, the shop has yet to charge me another penny except for the first trip. The second and third trips have been free and they really dont want me back with this problem again lol. He says all the tests they run, nothing comes up as being wrong with the car and it runs great. so like i said we shall see, lol. thanks for the help on here also....

That is a good shop, comebacks should be their problem not the customer's.
