Porsche 911 GT1

Heres my newest project, and so far im off to a bumpy start.

I decided to make a road going version of this awesome racecar model.

I began by painting it black, after fixing some body panel problems, such as panel lines not deep enough, some of the lines had been molded wrong etc.

ORANGE PEEL :( The first of my problems. Lets hope i dont get any more problems, but first i have to fix this. More soon!

How do you expect? I guess you can't say you done a great job: well as a start I'll give you an advice regarding photo skills: it seems not a great idea to shoot a black car ahead of a Playstation, you'll also help your camera to work better if you place a backdrop, better in a different color (white or gray?). We all own or know how is a Playstation ;) we don't need to see another one LOL

Speaking of the finishing: let us know how you done the paintjob and we'll say something concerning how to fix it: I see something other than OP, I see dirty, splatters etc. . If you want a superb finishing I guess you need DOT fluid or other stipping agents, but if you say more about your finishing procedure we'll say something more ;)

well i think i am going to sand it and start over again, sorry about the PS2, i guess i shall make amybe a small diorama or something ;)

And also sorry about pic quality, i use my fone.

If you sand down (I reccomend to strip it) consider to glue in place, fill and sand down the rear portion of the front wheel arch, anyway I like the idea of a street GT1, any idea about racing stripes (like the Ford GT40> newGT) or other decorations?

Working on your pics is going to help alot. The more clearly we can see, the better we can help (and the better you can show off stuff that goes right).

First of all, you must have lots of light. The more light, the better. A couple hundred watts within a foot or two of your subject is a good place to start. Second, a fone just isn't a replacement for a camera- they simply aren't designed to do this kind of photography well.


As for the painting, tell us everything you're doing, and maybe we can help with what's going wrong. It sounds/looks like you're putting the paint on too fast and too heavy- but I can't help unless I know what you're doing.

yeah, my dad used to work spraying cars as an aprentice before he got his current 13+ year job, so he knows a bit about what to do. when i asked him why i got orange peel no matter what i did, he told me it isnt the way im applying the paint, its the fact that i didnt warm the can up. Although he didnt see application.

For applying it, i started with a base coat, misted on lightly, then a second light coat, then 2 heavier coats. i think where i kept my model may have something to do with it, maybe i should use a box or a microwave or something to keep it when sprayed? All i did was cover the model over with some A3 card.

Anyway here is an update:

I decided to put some non-stock rims on it. Purely because they look cool, and i didnt want to do another completely oob.

As you can see, the rear tires are waaay too wide for these rims, so i may overcome this using some styrene maybe?

Anyway, for now i have a bigger problem, there is a Lip on these donor rims.

Hi, I am building the race version of this car at the moment.

Like Gio suggested, I recommend glue the rear part of front wheel arch (that's a mouthful) onto the body before painting. Also, glue the 2 seperate parts of the rear cowlings together before paint them too.

I also noticed some mold line - firs pic, the front quater panel, see the vertical line? That mold line should be sanded off, there are other mold seam too find and sand them.

What kind of paint are you using? That might be part of the problem

im using acrylic spray paint... is that a problem, i managed to use the base coat of gray well, but when i get to the black, i get the orange peel effect. also, yeah i should have sanded the mold lines :P

I decided a Bronz/Chrome would go well with the black body.
