My name is Mike and I drive a 1989 BMW 525i series, I bought the car used. I have had the car for alittle over 2 years now. ABout 3 months ago, I was driving and I noticed that as I pushed on the gas peddal nothing happend expect the RPMs would go up and i would slowly move, not like how it is normally spoes to be. Then, I pulled off the road and called my parents, I am only 16, and had them come tow it home. The car has been sitting in the garage for the past 3 months, because we are low on money and i cant drive it. The car will only go in reverse and nothing else? Does anyone know what is wrong with it and how much it might cost.
Thanks,
Mike

I had this same issue with my 1998 BMW 528i. The outcome; new transmission. When you are driving and you give the car some gas and your RPMs rev up like you are in Park most likely means the car came out of drive. When this happened with mine I would have to stop and put it in Park and sometimes when placing the shifter in Reverse or Drive again, it would not go. One sign that this was coming on my car was when I would start it up sometimes, whether the engine was hot or cold, and place it in Reverse or Drive it would not engage. Luckly mine was under warranty. The dealership said the transmission fuild was burnt and there were metal pieces the tranny pan. Yikes!! Hope you have a warranty. Also, BMW could not really explain why this happened.

if you push on the gas in neutral or park and it doesnt rev then its most likely not the transmission. if you can only go in reverse then there are a few things that can be the prob.
first if you can only in reverse then its almost never the transmission because if the transmission is gonna die then reverse it the first thing to go.
the first thing i would check is the linkage underneath the car. its directly underneath the shifter.
