VR4 vs Neon

Yes a Neon, not a SRT-4.
I was driving on the highway when I passed by him, I was doing about 85 at the time. Looked to be an '02ish regular Neon, no rims, no hood, no special bumpers, and no wing. Just a stock looking, key word 'looking', Neon. I check my rearview to switch lanes, and about 50 yards back, I notice the Neon's headlights lift up and within a second or two he's 20 yards back.
I think to myself, "hmm...something's not right here...a Neon can't do that..."
So I give the engine half its possible air intake and bring it up to 100. Look back and he's right behind me.
I think again, "he must have swapped the SRT motor in there...normal Neon's don't just challenge sports cars...let's find out"
Up ahead is a nice straight where most of my highway runs happen, perfect. Except the right lane of the two-lane highway has too many cars in it to race. "Oh well, guess he'll have to play keep up".
We get to the straight going about 80 mph, I rev up, drop it to 3rd and hammer down the throttle. He followed suit immediately and we were off. I get to the top of 3rd, no change in distance between us. 4th gear I slowly start walking away from him. My exit was coming up fast so I shut down, at that time I was going about 125 mph or so and he was about 2 carlengths further back than when we started.
I was impressed, nice little sleeper he had there. So I slowed down, put the thumbs up out the window, and we went our seperate ways. Too bad I didn't get to talk to the guy to see what he had done.

Hahaha that must of caught you off guard. Could you here a turbo or BOV on his car? That is the only thing I can think of is that he had done the swap and then modded it a little even after that. Nice kill though.

Nice!
He wouldn't have needed to swap the 2.4L from the SRT-4. The stock 2.0L loves to be turbo-charged. In fact, the fastet TD I know of runs 8s and uses the DOHC head from a 2.0L Neon.

Oh really? I don't know anything about Neon mods so I just assumed.
Couldn't hear a blow-off or anything since he was behind me the entire time, had to have had something in it to be hanging with me like that though.

I think he would have to have forced induction, and the turbo is the common way on a Neon. There is no way he could have done it N/A.

My bet is SRT swap with stock recirc valve and stock SRT airbox. No turbo sound, and no bov vent...You'd never know what hit you until you heard the exhaust.
And even then, a couple guys I've met while I was in Phoenix with the same deal put so many resonators that theirs don't even burble/pop like stock sarties do.

It may have been the 2.0. I think it was an issue of Sport Compact Car where some guy was running the giggle gas on his, got smoked by a sarty, so went ahead and just built up the block he had. Think it was pretty fast, but that was a pre break up issue, so I don't have it anymore.

Oh well guess we'll never know for sure, not like I can go up to every stock looking Neon owner and say "hey, aren't you that guy I raced the other day?", it would take a lifetime.

Lol, sad to say...but easiest way would be to check SRTForums and see if a swapped Neon is bragging about almost killing a VR-4.
Probablly going to start like, "If we'd have been even on the start....."
LOLerskates to ROFLcopter.

Lol, I was just thinking the same thing. The night I do not speak of that I lost to a near stock 240SX, I was tempted to go forum hunting to find the guy I raced.

cool. that's actually the kind of thing i like to hear. Sure, it's a neon, and sure, they are usually total ricers. But this kid knew what he was doing. None of that gimmicky whale-tail $#*@ on this car, just straight guns.
Still good to hear you beat him though. A neon is still a neon.

Totally unrelated, but yeah...they HATE when you say that. I don't, because my old car had its ass HANDED to itself when I found myself looking at the tailights of a GT35R trimmed, de-winged SRT-4 at the end of a 40-140 roll-on.
Woke my butt RIGHT up. Needless to say, when the Vitesse S3 went on the car, I never had problems again:grinyes:

Yeah, the SRT-4 is no more a Neon than a WRX is an Imrezza or the Evo is a Lancer.
