Jeep tranny acting up

!990 Jeep Cherokee 192000 miles, 4.0L auto trans. After motor died while slowing for a stop sign, motor dies sometimes, restarted and put it back in D and the Jeep seemed to idle pretty rough, not like it was missing a cylinder, but a very rough idle. Left the light and it was all it could to pull away, like it was bogged down or something. Once I got up to speed it would not upshift. Almost like it was hung in 2nd gear or somthing. After setting for a few hours went out to drive it and it seemed to drive like nothing ever happened. Replaced tranny about 8 years ago with a like tranny, think it was a tranny made out of the country. Again, it seems to be running ok now but any ideas would be appreciated.

For the engine quitting, I'd recommend replacing the Crankshaft Position Sensor; it's a common problem and there are many threads on it.

For the transmission, I'd suggest changing the fluid and filter; simply drop the pan, change the filter and refill (my 2000 GC takes about 5 quarts with pan drop).

Something else you may want to try is Auto-RX. It cleans your transmission over time. It helped my trans to shift a bit better - I got mine at 86K and now have almost 140K. I drop the pan and change fluid about every 30K miles and haven't had a problem.

Another thing you can look for on your trans problem--check the MAP sensor to make sure it is working properly and check the vacuum lines running to the MAP sensor. A bad MAP sensor or its vacuum lines leaking would cause the problem you described, especially the intermittant shifting problem starting from a red light.

I had the Crank position sensor replaced about a year ago. Had the tranny flushed about the same time but did not get it serviced with a filter replacement or anything. That is my next thing i will probably do. I have considered a tranny additive. When it gets serviced i will have the vac lines and Map sensor checked alos. It has driven just fine for the last couple of days. Thanks for your replies.

the stalling is more than likely the CPS. I just had mine replaced after about four or five episodes of stalling for no apparent reason. Runs fine now.

Good Luck!
