I am wondering if anyone has ever changed the TOD speed sensor? How difficult was it?

Thanks.

Jim

Hello Jim,
I looked up the speed sensor in my manual and it shows two diffierent ones. One is located behind the instrument cluster, according to my book it is for a LS model. Then there is a transmission mounted sensor. Again you test it by taking out the instrument cluster. Raise the vehicle off the ground and support it on the 4 corners with jackstands. MAKE SURE IT IS STABLE. Put a digital multi meter set at the AC voltage scale on the two posts on the back of the cluster. You may want to find a picture of the cluster, the manual is not very discriptive. Start the vehicle and verify that the VSS voltage increases as the drive shaft speed increases. If it does not the sensor on the transmission needs to be replace. It looks as though it is held in place with one screw. It has an "O"ring that must be replaced also. Looks real simple and straight forward.

Good Luck

I am wondering if you are referring to the TOD sensors themselves which are located on the transfer case. One monitors the rear prop and the other monitors the front. When it senses inputs that indicate slippage the control module shifts torque accordingly from the way I have read it. From what I could see I think they may be separate from the speed sensor.....or else I am way off on the model being discussed?
I have not worked on them, but have followed some threads about the system....maybe a forum search would help?
Anyway, good luck, hope I have not created more confusion.
One guys opinion

Hi Mike,

I have gone over my manual a number of times and can not find the sensors you are talking about. I hope I have not led jim astray but the info I posted earlier was all I could find.

I believe that the ones on the transfer case are what I am talking about. Many thanks for all of the tips.

Jim
